How we make built-in bookshelves for Collier Row

A built-in bookcase is shelving made for one wall, one alcove or one room. It can run wall to wall and up to the ceiling, so books have a proper home. If you are thinking about built-in bookshelves in Collier Row, we start with a design visit to measure the wall and talk through what the shelves will hold. If you are living with alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste and somewhere to keep toys and books tidy, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Collier Row, the main room is often well proportioned, with a bay, a chimney breast and not many other recesses. Built-in bookshelves can fill the alcoves, run the length of a wall or frame the chimney breast. Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood keep the pieces stable, and the paint finish is agreed with you.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Materials and finishes

Shelves

For a long shelf, we use a thicker board, a lip on the front or a support so it stays straight under books. Shorter bays are another answer.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the bookcase is fitted. Small marks on it are simple to touch up.

What happens on fitting day

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You describe the room and what the shelves will hold. It might be a whole wall, an alcove or the space around a door.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing.
  4. Once you are happy, the shelving is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves thick enough for their span.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books.

Before fitting day

  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

How to get a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Advice

Practical tips

Getting the most from built-in bookshelves starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Count roughly how many shelves your books fill now
  • Note the sizes of your largest books and records
  • Plan heavy items for the lower shelves
  • Plan any sockets or wiring with your electrician before fitting

On an outside wall, don’t pack books tight against the back. Watch for any musty smell or marks.

Use mats under plants and vases on painted shelves so spills don’t mark the paint. Dry any spills quickly.

Questions we are often asked

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Collier Row?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Romford station?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, and adjustable ones let the spacing change. A mix often works best.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

Getting it in is planned at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Will built-in bookshelves sag?

Shelves are sized for their span, depth and the weight they’ll carry. For long runs, we use a thicker shelf, a front lip or a support, and birch plywood helps keep them flat. Mention anything very heavy when we plan.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Living-room carpentry in Collier Row: local notes

About 59% of the homes in the streets around Collier Row went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 33% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Collier Row include Numbers 215 (Grade II), about 0.6 miles south. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Havering included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Collier Row. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Hare Hall, about 1.7 miles east. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. Close to Raphael Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. For families living near Rise Park Infant School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it during the design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
