Built-in bookshelves for your home in Romford

What it’s made from

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is stiff and strong, so it is a good choice for shelves that carry books. You can paint the edge or show the layers.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF gives crisp edges and smooth faces, ready for spray or hand painting. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice.

Built-in bookshelves in Romford

Shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves add stiffness and look solid, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing as your books change. A mix often works best, with fixed shelves where the bookcase needs strength. If you’re living with bare walls that could hold shelving and bookcases that lean or wobble, that’s what built-in bookshelves are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around Romford, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. That leaves room for built-in bookshelves in the alcoves, along a full wall or around the chimney breast, depending on how you use the room. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

Built-in living-room furniture in Romford

In the area around Romford, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 32%) and the years since 2000 (about 30%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of Romford is within about a quarter of a mile of the Romford Conservation Area. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Around a third of the homes in the area around Romford (about 30%) were built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Newer homes usually have plasterboard stud walls and open-plan rooms, often with no chimney breast, so the fixings go into the studs, or heavier pieces stand on the floor.

Living in a block of flats near Romford station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If you live in a period home close to Parish Church of St Edward the Confessor, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. Near listed buildings like Parish Church of St Edward the Confessor, less than half a mile north of the centre of Romford, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What happens on fitting day

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Built-in bookshelves arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You let us know about your books and the wall you have in mind. It might be a whole wall, an alcove or the space around a door.
  2. We come to measure and talk through depths, heights and cupboards, with the shelf spans in mind.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing.
  4. Once you are happy, the shelving is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves thick enough for their span.
  5. We bring it to your home and fit it in place.

Before we arrive

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Empty the space we will be working in

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

I live near Romford station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Romford?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London, and Romford is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time on site depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?

They can be, and many people choose a mix. We normally keep some shelves fixed for strength, and the rest can be adjustable.

When you need someone else

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Structural changes, such as taking out a chimney breast
  • Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
  • Electrical work, like new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician

Materials and parts

  • Birch plywood
  • Cupboards below
  • Fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish

What it costs

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • How big the furniture is
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

What we need to know

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Examples of the look you’re after

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Tips worth knowing

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Book your electrician first if sockets need moving
  • Tell us about parking and access during the design visit
  • Consider deeper cupboards at the bottom
  • Allow room for the collection to grow

A soft, dry or slightly damp cloth is all painted shelves need. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, as they can dull the finish.

Overloading is the main cause of sagging. If you plan to add a heavy collection later, say so during the design visit, so we can allow for it.
