Walk-in wardrobes in Strawberry Hill

Drawers, shelves and shoe storage make a walk-in wardrobe work day to day. Shelves suit folded clothes and bags, smaller things go in drawers and shoes can have racks or shelves of their own. If the room allows, we can include a dressing table. Most enquiries start with room for two wardrobes in one space and long and double hanging planned around your clothes, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Older bedrooms normally have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Strawberry Hill date from then. That height can be used, with fitted furniture taken up to the cornice and top cupboards for occasional things. Picture rails, skirting boards and coving are met neatly or cut around, so the furniture suits the house.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you get in touch.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

What happens on fitting day

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. You tell us about the room.
  2. We come to measure and go through the design.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units and trim the edges to meet the walls and ceiling.
  6. Before we leave we go through the doors and drawers with you; new paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

How to prepare

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Open rail systems are simple and adaptable, which suits some people well. Bespoke joinery lets you mix doors, drawers, shelves and hanging, painted to match the room. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so off-the-shelf pieces either don’t fit or leave a gap either side. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

Caring for painted furniture

These points come up often when people plan walk-in wardrobes. They help whatever the room:

  • Sort through your clothes before the design visit
  • Talk to your electrician early about lighting
  • Wipe painted surfaces with a soft, damp cloth
  • Consider a mix of doors and open shelves

New paintwork takes a while to harden after fitting. Go easy on painted surfaces at first and avoid harsh cleaners.

Before the design visit, sort through your clothes. We plan the layout around your clothes, so a clear-out first gives a better design.

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • How big the furniture is
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Helping us understand the room

These details help when you contact us:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Strawberry Hill

Does a conservation area in or near Strawberry Hill affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Strawberry Hill station?

Yes, homes across Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.

Can you put a walk-in wardrobe in part of a bedroom?

Yes. A run of units can define a dressing area, while any new walls are for your builder.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Walk-in wardrobes in Strawberry Hill: local notes

In the streets around Strawberry Hill, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 18%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Strawberry Hill, 21 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Richmond upon Thames included. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Strawberry Hill. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.

If you live in a period home close to Holy Trinity Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. Close to Marble Hill Park? Walk-in wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Chapel in the Wood, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
