Built-in bookshelves in Ham: what you get
Books weigh a lot, and a wall of them puts real load on the fixings. Each bookcase is fixed with fixings chosen for the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall. Loose plaster or a weak wall should be dealt with first. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste and shelving that works with picture rails and cornices.
Concrete floors and ceilings are common in post-war blocks, and drilling into them takes the right tools and fixings. With many homes around Ham dating from the post-war decades, we check the walls during the design visit before built-in bookshelves are designed. Where a wall is a lightweight partition, heavy pieces stand on the floor and are fixed back for stability.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

How we price built-in bookshelves
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- How big the furniture is
- How many doors and drawers there are
- The internal fittings
- Parking and unloading on your street
Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.
Getting in touch
You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. For a quote, use our contact form.
FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Ham
Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Ham?
Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London, and Ham is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Is it possible to frame a window with bookshelves?
Yes. Wrapping shelves around a door or window is a good way to fill a wall. We measure the openings at the measuring visit, and we plan the shelves around the architraves.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.
What affects the price of built-in bookshelves?
Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. You’ll get a written quote once we’ve measured up.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.
What else we make in Ham
Built-in bookshelves for homes in Ham
About 63% of the homes in the streets around Ham went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 20% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Ham, 13 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. About 40% of households in the streets around Ham live in terraced houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Many London terraces have a chimney breast and alcoves in the main rooms, which suit built-in bookshelves built to their exact widths.
For a family home near Meadlands Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. Living in a block of flats near Teddington station? Then the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. For an older house near Ham Christian Centre, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.
What built-in bookshelves cannot fix
It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:
- Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
- Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
- Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

From workshop to your room
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Post-war homes often have concrete or block walls, so fixings are chosen for the wall on fitting day. Floors and doorways are protected while the sections come in, and the pieces are assembled in the room.
- You get in touch with a few details about where the bookshelves will go.
- At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
- We then send a written quote for the bookshelves.
- The sections are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the shelving in your home, scribing the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
- The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.
Before we arrive
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
Starting with a design visit
A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Looking after your furniture
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:
- Tell us where the heaviest things will go
- Note the sizes of your largest books and records
- Think about cupboards below for things you’d rather hide
- Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves
Fill the shelves evenly rather than all at once. Put the heaviest books on lower shelves and near uprights, which helps the shelves stay straight.
Do not load shelves beyond what they were planned for. Mention any heavy collection you plan to add when we design the shelves.
