Built-in bookshelves in Surbiton Park
The right depth depends on your books. Paperbacks need much less depth than hardbacks, art books or records. Too deep, and paperbacks get lost at the back; too shallow, and big books hang over the edge. A common answer is deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower ones above. Most enquiries start with bookshelves in keeping with an older house and room for a record collection, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, so the walls behind built-in bookshelves could be solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. We check what the walls are made of at the design visit, then choose the fixings. If your room has a chimney breast, the alcoves are an obvious place for built-in bookshelves; if not, a full wall works well.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the built-in bookcase we have designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

The problems built-in bookshelves solve
New owners of older houses often want shelving that suits the house. Alcoves and chimney breasts make natural places for books.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
- Books piled on the floor
- Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
- A bare wall above a doorway
For an older house near St John's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
What to check before you book
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
Tips worth knowing
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Plan any sockets or wiring with your electrician before fitting
- Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves
- Tell us where the heaviest things will go
- Decide whether you want doors on the lower section
Dust shelves with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays, as they can dull the finish.
Use mats under plants and vases on painted shelves. Wipe up spills right away.
Questions we’re often asked
Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Surbiton Park?
Yes. We cover all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London, and Surbiton Park is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Surbiton Park?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?
Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on your lease.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it is useful to be around at the end.
Can bookshelves go around a door?
Yes. Shelves can run either side of a door or window and bridge across the top. It makes good use of wall space that usually goes unused and can frame a window seat.
From workshop to your room
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We measure the hall, stairs, doors and any lift as well as the room, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.
- You let us know about your books and the wall you have in mind.
- We come to measure and talk through depths, heights and cupboards, with the shelf spans in mind.
- A written quote follows.
- Once you’re happy, the shelving is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves thick enough for their span.
- We bring it to your home and fit it in place. Everything is levelled and scribed to the walls as it goes in.
How to prepare
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
How to get a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Advice
Flats, blocks and rented homes
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the design visit.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves
The price for your room depends on:
- How square the room is
- The internal fittings
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
