Need built-in bookshelves in Battersea?

Is it time for built-in bookshelves?

Often, the books simply have nowhere left to go. Piles on the floor and double rows on the shelves are a familiar sign. A built-in bookcase uses a whole wall.

Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:

  • Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
  • Books piled on the floor
  • Empty alcoves that could hold books
  • Shelving that frames a window

If your home is one of the older houses near Clapham Welsh Presbyterian Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?

About our built-in bookshelves in Battersea

Bookshelves do not have to stop at a doorway or a window. We can build shelves either side of a door and bridge them over it, and the same works around a window with a seat beneath it. It uses wall space that often goes to waste. We make built-in bookshelves from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about shelves deep enough for large books and books piled on the floor.

With a large share of homes around Battersea built before 1919, the living room is often two rooms knocked through, with a chimney breast in each half. That can mean one pair of alcoves for shelving and the other for low cupboards, with the screen on a chimney breast between. Older internal walls can be lath and plaster rather than brick, which changes how shelving is fixed.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Questions from Battersea

My home in Battersea is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Built-in bookshelves are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

My house in Battersea is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

How is the price worked out?

Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us, and we’ll see what we can do.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

What happens on fitting day

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves will not sag.
  3. Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Getting a quote

You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly during the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, message us from the contact page with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Built-in bookshelves in Battersea: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Battersea, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 48%) and the years since 2000 (about 20%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. What affects the price in Battersea

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The width and height of the space

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Getting in touch

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To book one, drop us a line using the contact form.

Practical tips

New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Think about whether the spacing needs to change later
  • Check the heights of art books, files and records
  • Decide whether you want doors on the lower section
  • Let us know about access early

Leave a little air behind books on an external wall, to help avoid condensation. Watch for any musty smell or marks.

Overloading is the main cause of sagging. Mention any heavy collection you plan to add when we design the shelves, so we can allow for it.

How it is made

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF gives crisp edges and smooth faces, ready for spray or hand painting. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice.

Spray-painted finish

Spraying in the workshop means the shelves arrive already painted. Treat the shelves gently while the paint cures.
