Built-in bookshelves for your home in Wandsworth

How we make built-in bookshelves for Wandsworth

The right depth depends on your books. Paperbacks sit happily on shallow shelves, while art books, atlases and records need more. Too deep, and paperbacks get lost at the back; too shallow, and big books hang over the edge. Deeper cupboards below and shallower shelves above often work well. We make built-in bookshelves from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are bowing shelves in an old bookcase and bare walls that could hold shelving.

In streets where so much of the housing went up before 1919, as it did around Wandsworth, the living room is often two rooms knocked through, with a chimney breast in each half. That can mean one pair of alcoves for shelving and the other for low cupboards, with the screen on a chimney breast between. Older internal walls can be lath and plaster rather than brick, which changes how shelving is fixed, and long shelves are sized so they do not sag under books.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Questions we are often asked

Do you cover homes near Wandsworth Town station?

Yes. We cover the whole of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in Wandsworth?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?

Some or all of them can be adjustable. A few fixed shelves keep the bookcase rigid.

Can my walls take a full bookcase?

We check how the wall is built at the design visit. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy loads are fixed into sound structure. Loose plaster or a weak wall needs repairing before fitting.

Can you build bookshelves over a radiator?

It’s possible with some thought. The heat has to rise and move into the room, so we leave a gap or open front rather than boxing the radiator in. Some people prefer to keep shelves clear of it or ask a plumber to move it.

Will built-in bookshelves sag?

Sag comes down to span, depth and load. We size the shelves and use birch plywood where strength matters, with supports or shorter bays on long runs. Overloading any shelf will still make it bend, so spread heavy books out.

Tips worth knowing

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Note the sizes of your largest books and records
  • Think about whether the spacing needs to change later
  • Let us know about access early
  • Decide whether you want doors on the lower section

Leave a little air behind books on an external wall. Look out for damp signs early.

Watch for damp marks on external walls behind the shelves. The cause is a job for the right trade, and it’s easier to deal with before it spreads.

What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves

There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How square the room is
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What to send when you contact us

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It’s enough to send:

  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

To make a start, use our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.

From workshop to your room

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch about built-in bookshelves. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and agree shelf depths and spacing, and talk about cupboards below.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, including spray or hand painting.
  4. We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them.

Preparing the room

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Starting with a design visit

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Advice

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf bookcases are cheaper and quick to buy. They also come with you when you move. Built-in shelves stay with the house and are made for its walls. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Each side can be made to its own size.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

Why us?

  • Designed for the room you have
  • Every quote follows a design visit
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Edges scribed to follow your walls

Take a look at how bespoke compares with ready-made or what a quote should include.

Living-room storage in Wandsworth

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Wandsworth were built before 1919 (about 49%) and since 2000 (about 27%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Wandsworth include Church of St Anne (Grade II*), under half a mile east, and Church Row (Grade II*), under half a mile north-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. More than a third of the homes in the streets around Wandsworth (about 49%) were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Houses of that age typically have alcoves, tall ceilings and picture rails, all of which shelving can use, with shelves sized so they do not sag under books.

For a flat near Wandsworth Town station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For a family home near St Anne's CofE Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Do you need built-in bookshelves in Wandsworth?

New owners of older houses often want shelving that suits the house. The alcoves beside a chimney breast are an obvious home for shelving.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • Shelves packed two rows deep
  • Space for art books and records
  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
  • Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy

If you live in a period home close to St Anne's Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.
