Built-in bookshelves in Roehampton

Could you do it yourself?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

About our built-in bookshelves in Roehampton

Older rooms often have skirting, picture rails and coving to work around. We can cut around them, stop below them or run neatly up to them. Since period walls are rarely flat, the edges are scribed to follow them. We make built-in bookshelves from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are books piled on the floor and shelves that sag under books.

A good share of the homes around Roehampton were built in the post-war years, between 1945 and the early 1970s. Rooms from that era are often squarer than in older houses, and many have no chimney breast at all. That makes a full wall of built-in bookshelves a strong option, or a recess built out with cupboards either side. Some walls of that age are concrete or blockwork, and the fixings are matched to them.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Pricing built-in bookshelves in Roehampton

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Parking near your home
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • The overall size of the piece

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What to send when you contact us

To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:

  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • How you want to use the space
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Is bespoke worth it?

Standalone bookcases leave gaps at the top and sides, and against an uneven wall the gaps are obvious. Built-in shelves are scribed to the walls and run to the ceiling if you want. Several standalone pieces of different sizes can make a plain room look busy, whereas a single fitted run gives one clean line. It’s painted in a colour you choose.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

What happens on fitting day

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Estates sometimes have their own parking rules alongside the council’s, so it is useful to tell us at the design visit. Fitting day is the sections coming in, being joined and fixed in place. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the wall and your books, and whether you want cupboards below.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and talk through the design. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
  3. You receive a written quote setting out the shelving, materials and finish.
  4. We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop.
  5. We install the bookcase, set it level and fix it with fixings that suit the wall. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Preparing the room

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Getting a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.

Advice

Built-in bookshelves in Roehampton: local notes

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 46% of the housing in the streets around Roehampton, with about 18% built between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Part of Roehampton is in the Dover House Estate Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. For fitting in Roehampton, a van usually needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Tell us what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

If you live near Putney Heath, built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. Near listed buildings like Roehampton House (at Queen Mary's Hospital), less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Roehampton, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Fulham Palace, about 1.3 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Questions we are often asked

Does a conservation area in or near Roehampton affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Roehampton?

Yes, we work across Wandsworth, Roehampton included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details.

How long will the fitting take?

It depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The bookcase is built in our workshop first.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Do built-in bookshelves have adjustable shelves?

They can be, and many people choose a mix. We typically keep some shelves fixed for strength, with adjustable ones in between.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

The furniture is built in sections, sized for the route not just the room. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways during the design visit.
