Fitted wardrobes in Tooting Bec: what you get

A fitted wardrobe is built into the room itself, running floor to ceiling and wall to wall where the space allows. That leaves no gap above to gather dust and no wasted space at the sides. For a bedroom in Tooting Bec, the first step is a design visit to measure up and go through the design. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are storage boxes stacked under the bed and bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes.

Around Tooting Bec, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast with an alcove either side. Fitted furniture can fill the alcoves, wrap round the chimney breast or run across a whole wall. Walls and floors in older houses are rarely true, so the pieces are scribed to the wall and levelled at the base.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

How it’s made

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the wardrobes are fitted. It is easy to touch up later, and it suits a softer, traditional look.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF has no grain, so painted doors look smooth and even. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted wardrobes.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Tooting Bec

My house in Tooting Bec is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Tooting Bec?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

How do I get a quote for fitted wardrobes in Tooting Bec?

Simply message us from the contact page. It’s useful to send rough sizes and a few photos, and then we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design.

Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?

Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside. If there is damp on the wall already, it should be sorted first.

What prompts fitted wardrobes in Tooting Bec

Sometimes it is a change in how a room is used. Fitted wardrobes give it proper storage without crowding the floor. Adjustable shelves let the inside change over time.

People normally get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • No space in front for doors to swing
  • An awkward slope in a loft bedroom

Close to Wandle Park? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Is bespoke worth it?

Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe runs to the ceiling and the walls, so the space is used and there is nowhere for dust to collect on top. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Each side can be made to its own size.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Fitting day, step by step

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as we’ll have talked about at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. It starts when you let us know about the room, the floor it is on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. We visit to measure the room and discuss the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too. Tell us about parking as well, as a van usually needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
  3. A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
