What we do not do

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Building work or structural changes
  • Electrical work inside the cupboard
  • Any gas work around the boiler

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

How we make fitted cupboards for Barwell

The carcasses and doors are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, chosen for the job each part does. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits shelves and drawer boxes. We finish them by spray painting in the workshop or by hand painting, in a colour agreed with you. People usually come to us about tall cupboards where space is short and storage for towels and bedding, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

An interwar house tends to have truer walls than a Victorian one, though rarely square corners. Around Barwell, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, and every piece is still scribed where it meets the wall. Each piece is levelled on site, so doors, lids and drawers line up.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the design visit.

Storage in Barwell homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Barwell were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 45%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 23%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Barwell include The Tower at Ruxley Towers (Grade II), less than half a mile west. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 45% of homes in the neighbourhood around Barwell were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Homes from that era tend to have little built-in storage, so fitted cupboards make a real difference, fixed to suit concrete, block or brick.

For a flat near Chessington South station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. Close to Claygate Common? Fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For an older house near Church of St Mary the Virgin, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting gives a softer, traditional look in an older house. The colour is agreed with you.

Shelves

Shelves are spaced to suit what goes on them, from towels and bedding to tins and boxes. Long spans need a thicker shelf or a support.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

Do you cover homes near Chessington South station?

Yes. We cover all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is Barwell in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?

Yes, we work across Kingston upon Thames, Barwell included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.

How are fitted cupboards priced?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Will a fitted cupboard work on a sloping floor?

Yes. Each cupboard is trimmed to the shape of the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth. It is one of the reasons fitted joinery suits period homes.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking.

Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes. The cupboard is built around the space and ventilation the boiler’s instructions ask for, with doors that open wide for servicing. Work on the boiler itself is a job for a Gas Safe engineer.

What affects the price in Barwell

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • Parking near your home
  • The internal fittings
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Getting in touch

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • How you want to use the space

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

From workshop to your room

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. First, you let us know about the room and what it needs. A rough sketch helps if you have one.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and the layout inside.
  3. A written quote is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home and check every door. They’re set level and scribed to the walls as they go in.

How to prepare

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Getting a quote

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.
