Tips worth knowing

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Make a note of what needs a home
  • Deal with any damp walls first
  • Go easy on new doors for a while
  • Point out anything that needs access

Keep the way to the meters and fuse board clear. Avoid packing things in front of the meters, so engineers and meter readers can get to them quickly.

If there’s damp on a wall, have it sorted before we fit. A cupboard on a damp wall can trap moisture, and external walls can be colder than internal ones. We can allow for ventilation where it’s needed.

Fitted cupboards in Hampton Wick: what you get

Landings often have a corner or a stretch of wall that does nothing. A fitted cupboard there can hold towels, bedding and the things that never quite find a home, with shelves set at the heights you choose. The doors are planned so they open cleanly on a narrow landing. People usually come to us about hiding meters and a fuse board neatly and storage for towels and bedding; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Some homes have eaves, some have bays and some have neither, but almost every home has somewhere storage could go. Whatever kind of home yours is in Hampton Wick, we start by looking at what’s there. The storage is made in our workshop and fitted in your home.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

From workshop to your room

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

  1. We start with the space and what you want to store.
  2. We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the cupboards are fitted and trimmed to the room. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Making use of awkward spaces in Hampton Wick

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Hampton Wick were built before 1919 (about 37%) and since 2000 (about 26%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List has 82 entries within half a mile of the centre of Hampton Wick. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and fitted cupboards can be designed to work around them. About 46% of households around Hampton Wick live in purpose-built flats, well above the figure for Kingston upon Thames as a whole, about 30%, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.

If your children go to St John the Baptist Church of England Junior School or a school nearby, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Hampton Court Palace, about 1.4 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Hampton Wick?

Yes, Hampton Wick is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted cupboards fitted in Hampton Wick?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, provided the cupboard keeps to the boiler maker’s instructions. We plan the space and ventilation around it and keep access clear for the engineer.

Can you build a cupboard over the fuse board and meters?

Yes, while keeping access clear. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so we design doors or removable panels for that.

How much does a fitted cupboard cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each cupboard is different, so we price it after measuring. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

What prompts fitted cupboards in Hampton Wick

Sometimes the aim is to make storage look like part of the room. We can design doors that suit the style of the house, which keeps the look calm.

Fitted cupboards can help with:

  • Making use of an tricky alcove or corner
  • Storage for coats and shoes in the hallway
  • Storage for towels and bedding
  • Tall cupboards where space is short

If you live in a period home close to All Saints Church, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
