Fitted Cupboards in Surbiton

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted cupboards in Surbiton starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • A utility room with proper storage
  • A linen cupboard on the landing
  • Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing

Shelves

Some shelves can be set to move if your needs change.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, so it suits painted cupboards. It copes well in utility rooms and on cooler external walls.

Fitted cupboards in Surbiton: what you get

A utility or boot room has to work hard, every day. We can build tall cupboards for the vacuum, ironing board and mop, alongside spaces for the washing machine and dryer you choose. Plumbing is for your plumber and new sockets for your electrician, so we plan the cupboards around their work. If your home has tall cupboards where space is short and a linen cupboard on the landing, that’s what fitted cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In an older home, panelled doors and painted mouldings may suit; in a newer one, plain flat doors may fit better. Whatever your home in Surbiton is like, the door style is part of the design conversation. You choose the colour, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Questions we’re often asked

Do you cover homes near Surbiton station?

Yes. We cover all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

I live in a flat in Surbiton. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Fitted cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Can you build a cupboard over the fuse board and meters?

Yes. We can build a cupboard that hides them neatly and still leaves them reachable. We don’t move meters or fuse boards, as that’s a job for your supplier or electrician.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Can you box in my boiler with a fitted cupboard?

Yes. The cupboard is built around the space and ventilation the boiler’s instructions ask for, with doors that open wide for servicing. Any work on the boiler itself is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards

The price for your room depends on:

  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The width and height of the space
  • Parking near your home

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

What to send when you contact us

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Any ideas or images you have saved

Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To get started, get in touch through our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

Before and after fitting day

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Measure the route into the room as well as the room
  • Make sure walls are dry before we fit
  • Tell us about parking at the design visit

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Timber and walls shift slightly through the year, so the hinges allow small adjustments later. If a door catches, it is usually a small hinge adjustment.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building, and it’s best done early.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. First, you let us know about the space and what you need to store.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the design, the materials and the finish, for you to read through.
  4. The cupboards are made in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

Before fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand

Bespoke fitted cupboards or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf cupboards are quicker to get and usually cost less, and they suit some rooms well. In an older house with uneven walls, they tend to leave gaps. A fitted cupboard costs more but follows the room. A standard unit is the same in every home, whatever the room is like, while fitted furniture is drawn for the room it goes into. It can be painted in a colour chosen for that room.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
