About our wall beds in Barwell

Many people now work from home in a room that also has to sleep guests. We can design a wall with a fold-down bed and a desk or shelving around it, without the bed taking over. We can allow for cables to the desk, though any new sockets are for your electrician. Typical reasons to get in touch are more floor space in a studio flat and a proper bed instead of a sofa bed; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

The front bedroom in many 1920s and 1930s houses sits above a bay, so fitted storage typically goes on the walls either side while the bay stays open. Interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around Barwell, so that shape of room is worth knowing. We measure every wall, even where the room looks square.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the wall bed we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Tips worth knowing

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
  • Consider how many people will sleep in it
  • Plan where chairs and desks will sit
  • Think about where extra bedding will go

New paintwork takes a while to harden. Treat the cabinet gently at first, and wipe the cabinet with a soft cloth only.

Consider how often the bed will be used and by whom. That helps decide its size and the mechanism, and whether a desk or shelves go around it.

Common questions about wall beds

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Barwell?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Chessington South station?

Yes, homes across Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

What happens at the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

How fitting day works

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. First, you let us know about the space. Mention who the bed is for.
  2. The design visit covers measuring, the wall and the layout.
  3. You receive a quote in writing, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop.
  5. We fit the bed and storage in your home.

How to prepare

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Ask for a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. When you’re ready, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Why people ask for wall beds in Barwell

Some people are tired of sofa beds. With a wall bed, guests sleep on a real mattress, on a proper frame.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A hobby room with a bed for guests
  • Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep
  • A living room with a bed that folds away
  • A bed that looks like cupboards by day

For families living near Ellingham Primary School, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

How we price wall beds

The price for your room depends on:

  • Parking near your home
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What we need to know

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Examples of the look you are after

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Where other trades come in

Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
  • Supplying mattresses
  • Advice on your lease

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What it’s made from

  • Birch plywood
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
