Fitted cupboards for homes in Crook Log

Gas meters, electricity meters and fuse boards tend to be where you’d least like them, such as by the front door or in a hallway corner. A fitted cupboard can hide them neatly and still keeps access clear. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. If you are living with storage in a corner nothing else fits and storage for coats and shoes in the hallway, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Crook Log, many have had the loft converted, leaving low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Flats, leases and landlords

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Practical tips

People planning fitted cupboards often ask about these. They help whatever the room:

  • Think about what each cupboard will hold
  • Check stairs, landings and doorways for access
  • Keep boiler vents and meter access clear
  • Tell us about meters and boilers in the space

Keep the way to the meters and fuse board clear. Try not to fill the space in front of them, so engineers and meter readers can get to them quickly.

It is useful to list what you want to store before we measure. A coat cupboard and a linen cupboard need quite different insides, and knowing this early saves changes later.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Crook Log

I live near Bexleyheath station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Crook Log?

Yes. Crook Log is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bexley and London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some need consent for alterations. Your lease is something we cannot advise on, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.

Can you fit cupboards to walls that are not straight?

Yes, it’s something we deal with all the time. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so we scribe and level every cupboard.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, provided the cupboard keeps to the boiler maker’s instructions. We allow for the clearances and ventilation it needs and make sure an engineer can reach it.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

The furniture is built in sections. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the design visit.

Honest limits

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Relocating meters or the fuse board
  • Any gas work around the boiler
  • Building work or structural changes

Not sure whether your space suits fitted cupboards? You can use our contact form and we will tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

What it is made from

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Ventilated doors
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Adjustable shelves

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You get in touch and tell us whether the cupboard will house a boiler, meters or a fuse board.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the cupboard so meters, fuse boards and any boiler stay easy to reach. Boiler work itself is for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
  3. You receive a written quote for the cupboards.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with vents and access panels where they’re needed.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Preparing the room

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

How it’s made

Birch plywood

Shelves that carry weight need a strong board, and birch plywood is a good fit. We size each shelf for its span, depth and load.

Moisture-resistant MDF

A painted MDF door has a clean, even look, and the moisture-resistant grade copes with damper spots.
