Under-stairs storage in Crook Log: what you get
In many terraced houses, the gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board sits under the stairs. These must stay easy to reach for meter readers and engineers. We plan the storage around them, normally with a door that leaves them in clear reach, so you gain storage without losing access. At the design visit in Crook Log, we note what’s there and design around it. If you are living with a dark, wasted space under the stairs and stairs open to a room, with clutter on show, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
A good part of the housing around Crook Log is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the bay window at the front, the space under the stairs and the box room are the usual places to gain storage. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the under-stairs cupboard designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it is finished.

What prompts under-stairs storage in Crook Log
Many people get in touch after digging through clutter to reach a meter or the fuse board. Good storage can keep these in clear reach behind their own door, and the rest of the space can still work hard.
Requests we hear often include:
- An old cupboard door that does not suit the hall
- A sloping corner nobody can reach
- A dark, wasted space under the stairs
- No room for a small desk or a place to work
Near listed buildings like Red House, under half a mile south-east of the centre of Crook Log, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Questions we’re often asked
Is parking a problem for fitting in Crook Log?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Do you cover homes near Bexleyheath station?
Yes, homes across Bexley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Are drawers or cupboards better under the stairs?
Often a mix works best. Drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space, while a cupboard at the tall end takes coats, the vacuum or an ironing board. We will suggest a layout when we visit.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.
Should I send photos?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
How is under-stairs storage priced?
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The mix of drawers, doors and shelves, and the finish you choose, all play a part. We set it all out in a quote in writing.
Crook Log homes and under-stairs storage
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Crook Log were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 49%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List records 10 entries within half a mile of the centre of Crook Log. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. More than a third of the homes in the area around Crook Log (about 49%) date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Interwar houses typically have a straight flight of stairs with a cupboard below, often holding the meters or the fuse board, so the design keeps them reachable.
For a flat near Bexleyheath station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Close to Danson Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.

Could you do it yourself?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Ready-made units are designed for shipping and quick assembly. Bespoke storage is designed for one space and built to suit it, with birch plywood drawer boxes that hold screws well and carry weight. The right choice depends on how hard you want the space to work. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

From workshop to your room
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Advice
Materials and finishes
Birch plywood
Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. It goes into the carcasses, the shelves and the drawer boxes, with the edge either shown or painted.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well. It suits the doors, drawer fronts and panels of an under-stairs cupboard, where the finish is most on show.
