Fitted cupboards in Forestdale

Meters and fuse boards often sit in the most tricky places, like by the front door or in a hallway corner. We can build a cupboard that tidies them away, while keeping them easy to reach. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. If you’re living with tall cupboards where space is short and boxing in a boiler with room for servicing, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A good share of the homes around Forestdale were built between 1945 and the early 1970s. Post-war homes normally have squarer rooms and fewer nooks than period ones, so fitted cupboards often create the storage the house never had. Walls may be concrete, block or brick, so fixings are chosen for the wall.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the fitted cupboard we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you contact us.

Questions we are often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Forestdale?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do you cover homes near Sanderstead station?

Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

How long will the cupboards take to fit?

It depends on the job. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days, so you will know before we start.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Normally not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. We cannot advise on leases, so please check yours.

Making use of tricky spaces in Forestdale

In the area around Forestdale, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 53%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 37%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Croydon sets its own rules. If your street in Forestdale is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay through the council may be needed. We ask about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around Forestdale (about 53%) were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Post-war homes often have fewer nooks than older houses, so fitted cupboards add storage that was never built in, with fixings chosen for the wall.

Addington Palace, about 0.9 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. For families living near Courtwood Primary School, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Close to Addington Park? Fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

What happens on fitting day

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Walls in post-war homes can be concrete or blockwork, so the right fixings are part of the plan for fitting day. Floors and doorways are protected while the sections come in, and the pieces are assembled in the room.

  1. You tell us where the cupboards should go and what they need to hold.
  2. We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. The cupboards are made and finished in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the cupboards are fitted and trimmed to the room.

Advice

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards

Several things affect the price:

  • How square the room is
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Parking near your home

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

Helping us understand the room

When you contact us, these help most:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth

To make a start, use our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Many off-the-shelf units use chipboard with a printed surface. Our cupboards are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray or hand painted, finished to suit the room. In a plain post-war room, standalone pieces stand proud of the wall with nothing to frame them, whereas fitted furniture can make its own recesses.

Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

Why choose us

  • Made for your room, not a standard size

What it is made from

Spray-painted finish

Spray-painted cupboards arrive finished, so there is less to do on site.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, because it stays flat and paints beautifully. It copes well in utility rooms and on cooler external walls.
