Fitted cupboards for your home in Addington

How we make fitted cupboards for Addington

Many landings have a spare corner or wall that could work harder. We can turn it into a linen cupboard, or storage for bedding and spare towels, with shelves set at the heights you choose. We plan it so doors open without catching the stairs or the banister. If your home has a hallway cupboard for coats and shoes and storage in a corner nothing else fits, that’s what fitted cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Many post-war homes have a boiler in a hall, kitchen or landing cupboard. If it sits in a cupboard you’d like rebuilt, the new storage keeps the clearances and ventilation set out in the manufacturer’s instructions. With many homes around Addington built between 1945 and the early 1970s, we look for boilers, meters and fuse boards at the design visit. Work on the boiler itself is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Storage in Addington homes: local notes

The biggest share of homes in the streets around Addington, about 96%, were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 7 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Addington. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. About 38% of households around Addington live in terraced houses, well above the figure for Croydon as a whole, about 23%, the 2021 Census shows. Terraces bring narrow halls and tight stairs, so fitted cupboards are made in sections that fit.

Addington Palace, about 0.4 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size. For a family home near Applegarth Academy, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If you live near Addington Park, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Addington is about 4 miles north-west of Thornton Heath, in the London Borough of Croydon. Anywhere in Addington, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a quote in writing, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Our Croydon coverage includes Addington and the places around it.

We work across the CR0, CR2 and BR4 postcode area. Our area takes in homes on streets such as Lodge Lane, Falconwood Road and Addington Village Road, whether you want fitted cupboards or another piece made for the room. If you are just outside Addington, we also cover Coney Hall (1 mile north), Forestdale (1 mile south), Spring Park (1 mile north), New Addington (1 mile south-east) and West Wickham (1 mile north). We also make fitted cupboards in nearby places like Thornton Heath (4 miles north-west), Croydon (3 miles west), Coulsdon (5 miles south-west), Purley (4 miles west), Broad Green (4 miles north-west) and Upper Norwood (5 miles north-west).

Caring for painted furniture

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Tell us about meters and boilers in the space
  • Go easy on new doors for a while
  • Think about how the cupboards will get in
  • List what you want to store before the design visit

Over time, you may want to move a shelf or add a rail. Where we’ve fitted adjustable shelves, you can move them as needed as your storage changes.

If there’s damp on a wall, have it sorted before we fit. Damp behind a cupboard can lead to mould, and external walls can be colder than internal ones. Ventilation inside the cupboard helps too.

Questions we are often asked

Can you fit furniture in a home close to West Wickham station?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Addington?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

How long will the cupboards take to fit?

Every job is different. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote, so you will know before we start.

Will the cupboards fit my uneven walls?

Yes. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and levelled with a plinth or adjustable feet. That is one of the main reasons to choose fitted cupboards in an older house.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

We plan the route in at the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

What happens on fitting day

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Stairwells in post-war blocks can have tight turns, so the size of each section is set by the stairs as well as the lift. Where the building has a caretaker or managing agent, it’s useful to tell them before fitting day. We cover the floors in shared areas on the way in.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the space.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails, with a note of anything that must stay reachable.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

What fitted cupboards cannot fix

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Moving or servicing a boiler
  • Plastering, decorating or repairs to the walls
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)

Not sure whether your space suits fitted cupboards? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we will tell you. How it works.

Materials and parts

  • Birch plywood
  • Ventilated doors
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish

How we price fitted cupboards

Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The overall size of the piece
  • The number of doors and drawers

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

What we need to know

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.
