Fitted cupboards in Coombe
Few walls in an older house are truly straight, and floors and ceilings can be out of level too. Every cupboard is scribed, trimmed by hand to meet the wall and set it level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting boards, picture rails and coving are cut around or met neatly, so the cupboard looks as if it has always been there. We make fitted cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about using the full height of a room and somewhere for coats, shoes and bags.
Many post-war homes have a boiler in a hall, kitchen or landing cupboard. If it sits in a cupboard you’d like rebuilt, the new storage keeps the clearances and ventilation set out in the manufacturer’s instructions. With many homes around Coombe built between 1945 and the early 1970s, we look for boilers, meters and fuse boards during the design visit. Any boiler work is for a Gas Safe engineer.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Is it time for fitted cupboards?
Others want their cupboards to match the rest of the house. Painted doors with a simple frame can sit happily alongside period skirting and coving, so the cupboard looks as if it belongs.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving
- Using the full height of a room
- A linen cupboard on the landing
- Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
For families living near Coombe Wood School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.
Before you choose who makes it
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
How fitting day works
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Walls in post-war homes can be concrete or blockwork, so the right fixings are part of the plan for fitting day. We protect floors and doorways as the furniture comes in, and the pieces are assembled in the room.
- You get in touch and describe the space.
- We visit to measure the space and the route in from the street, including the stairs and doorways. It helps to let us know about parking then, as a van usually needs a permit or a paid bay in a controlled parking zone.
- We send a quote in writing.
- The cupboards are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
- We bring the sections in and fit them, scribed to the walls.
Preparing the room
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
Starting with a design visit

How it is made
Plinths and scribe strips
A plinth lifts the cupboard off the floor and hides adjustable feet. Scribe strips close the gap to a wall that isn’t straight.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done on site once everything is in place. Small marks are simple to touch in.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
A ready-made cupboard rarely suits a boiler or meter. The space needs to suit the boiler’s instructions and leave meters reachable, and a cupboard made for the spot can allow for them. In a flat with stairs or a small lift, large flat-pack units can be hard to get in, whereas fitted furniture is made in sections sized for the way in. The sections are joined once inside.
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Coombe
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Coombe?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Is Coombe in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?
Yes. Coombe is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Croydon and London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.
Can I send pictures before the visit?
Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.
Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?
Yes. We design the cupboard to keep the clearances and ventilation set out in the boiler maker’s instructions, with doors that open wide for servicing. Work on the boiler itself is a job for a Gas Safe engineer.
Will the cupboards fit my uneven walls?
Yes. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth. It is one of the reasons fitted joinery suits period homes.
