Common questions about fitted cupboards

Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Friern Barnet?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London, and Friern Barnet is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to New Southgate station?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

We plan the route in during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. We cannot advise on leases, so please check yours.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.

Fitted cupboards in Friern Barnet: what you get

In many London hallways, space is tight, so every cupboard needs to be worth the room it takes. A shallow cupboard can hold coats, shoes and bags without blocking the way, fitted out with a rail, hooks or shelves. Some people like a low bench with storage beneath for putting shoes on by the door. People usually come to us about hiding meters and a fuse board neatly and landing shelves for bedding and towels, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Where housing is mixed, as in much of London, no two homes have quite the same walls and floors. Fitted cupboards are scribed and levelled on site, so they look straight even where the room is not. You choose the paint colour, and whether it’s spray-painted or hand-painted.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Is bespoke worth it?

A flat-pack or ready-made cupboard is quick to buy and often cheaper, and in a square room they can work well. In an older house with uneven walls, they tend to leave gaps. A fitted cupboard costs more but follows the room. Walls and floors are seldom perfectly flat in any home, so standalone furniture can lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Why choose us

Making use of tricky spaces in Friern Barnet

In the streets around Friern Barnet, the largest groups of homes date from between 1973 and 1999 (about 28%) and before 1919 (about 27%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Friern Barnet, Historic England’s list includes Church of St John the Evangelist (Grade II*), under half a mile north-west, and Garden House of Friern Hospital (Grade II), less than half a mile east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Barnet sets its own rules. Where a street in Friern Barnet is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Parking near your home is worth mentioning during the design visit.

Close to Friary Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place. For a flat near New Southgate station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

The problems fitted cupboards solve

Moving into a flat often shows how little built-in storage there is. A tall cupboard in a hallway or a recess can make a real difference, because it can reach right up to the ceiling.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing
  • Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving
  • Storage for coats and shoes in the hallway
  • A cupboard for a recess or odd corner

If your children go to Holly Park Primary School or a school nearby, fitted cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Tips worth knowing

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Point out anything that needs access
  • Leave room in front of the meters
  • Make sure walls are dry before we fit
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls

Once the cupboards are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Treat the doors gently at first and avoid heavy cleaning. After that, a soft cloth and mild soapy water is all they need.

If there’s damp on a wall, have it sorted before we fit. Damp behind a cupboard can lead to mould, and external walls can be colder than internal ones. Ventilation inside the cupboard helps too.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. The fixings suit whatever the walls are made of. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You tell us where the cupboards should go and what they need to hold, including anything awkward like a boiler or meter.
  2. We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are. Doors, shelves and rails are agreed then too.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
