Fitted cupboards for homes in Gunnersbury

About 37% of the homes in the streets around Gunnersbury went up before 1919, and about 23% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 31 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Gunnersbury. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and fitted cupboards can be designed to work around them. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Hounslow sets its own rules. If your road in Gunnersbury falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

If you live in a period home close to St Michael's Church, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size. For a family home near Strand-on-the-Green Junior School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. Near listed buildings like Zoffany House, about 0.5 miles south-west of the centre of Gunnersbury, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

About our fitted cupboards in Gunnersbury

A boiler cupboard needs more thought than most. Every boiler comes with instructions on the space and ventilation around it, and the cupboard is built to respect them. Doors open wide enough for servicing, and any work on the boiler itself is for a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your home has hiding meters and a fuse board neatly and somewhere for coats, shoes and bags, that’s what fitted cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

A deep space is only useful if you can reach the back of it, so the design uses drawers, lids or shelves to bring things within reach. Whatever kind of home you have in Gunnersbury, the right answer depends on the depth and the height. Services like meters and boilers stay reachable.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Could you do it yourself?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Questions we’re often asked

I live near Gunnersbury station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.

Will a fitted cupboard work on a sloping floor?

Yes, it is something we deal with all the time. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so every cupboard is scribed and levelled.

How we price fitted cupboards

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The internal fittings
  • The width and height of the space
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Before the design visit

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, use our contact form.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home once everything is in place. Small marks are simple to touch in.

Plinths and scribe strips

We trim the edge of each cupboard to follow the wall, closing any gaps.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

From workshop to your room

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Before fitting day, we check the route in along with the room itself, so fitted cupboards arrive in sections that fit through. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You get in touch and let us know whether the cupboard will house a boiler, meters or a fuse board.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the cupboard so meters, fuse boards and any boiler stay easy to reach. Boiler work itself is for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with vents and access panels where they’re needed.
  5. The cupboards are fitted and set level, and we check the access with you.

Before fitting day

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Ask for a quote

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
