  • A corner too odd for a standard desk
  • Cables trailing across the desk and floor

Fitted home offices in Gunnersbury

How we make fitted home offices for Gunnersbury

Cables are easy to forget and hard to hide later. We design routes through the desk and units for chargers, screens and printers. If you need new sockets, they’re for your electrician, and we plan the furniture around them. Talking it through during the design visit in Gunnersbury saves trouble later. We make home offices from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a tangle of chargers and leads and no way to put work away.

In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, the room that becomes an office varies a lot: a box room, a bedroom wall, a recess or even a landing. Home offices are made for whichever you have in Gunnersbury, painted in a colour agreed with you.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Standalone office furniture can move with you, which suits a short stay. Fitted furniture stays put, and it makes more of the room. Which suits you depends on your plans. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a recess, a slope or an odd corner, and most homes have at least one. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote.

What you get with us

  • Over 300 projects completed
  • Saturday work by arrangement
  • Every quote follows a design visit
  • Designed for the room you have

Read our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf or what a quote should include.

When is bespoke worth it?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Questions from Gunnersbury

Does a conservation area in or near Gunnersbury affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you cover homes near Gunnersbury station?

Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

The furniture is built in sections, sized for the route as well as the room. At the design visit, we measure the route not just the room.

Is it possible to have a desk under the eaves?

Yes, where the loft has already been converted. We place the desk so you can sit and stand without hitting the slope, with storage built into the lower parts of the slope. The conversion itself is not our work.

What does a built-in desk cost?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. It depends on how much furniture you want, the layout and the finish. To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and we will arrange a design visit.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Fitting day, step by step

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It is useful to clear the room and the route in before fitting day, including pictures on nearby walls. We cover floors and doorways first. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the room.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about the equipment you use.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. Your office furniture is made at our workshop, sized for the room, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready for work.

Before fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Starting with a design visit

To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Advice

Honest limits

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Plastering and decorating around the office
  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Connecting printers and screens

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Filing drawers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Built-in desks
  • Cable routes

Flats, conversions and lettings

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we’ve measured the way in.

Built-in desks and shelving in Gunnersbury

In the area around Gunnersbury, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 37%) and the years since 2000 (about 23%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for home offices, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The Thorney Hedge Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Gunnersbury. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. All of London, Hounslow included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Gunnersbury. We go through parking and access during the design visit.

If you live near Turnham Green, a desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Zoffany House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. The wider area includes historic houses like Gunnersbury Park, about 0.7 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.
