Fitted cupboards in Woodlands

We make our cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, chosen for the job each part does. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is good for long shelves. The finish is either spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We make fitted cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are cupboards for a utility or boot room and cupboards that suit a period house.

Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around Woodlands, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Making use of awkward spaces in Woodlands

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Woodlands were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 32%) and since 2000 (about 25%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The Woodlands Grove Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Woodlands. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 25% of homes in the streets around Woodlands were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Homes built since 2000 rarely have much storage, and they tend to have stud walls, so fitted cupboards are designed with fixings to suit.

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Mary the Virgin, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. If you live near Inwood Park, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. Living in a block of flats near Isleworth station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Flats, conversions and lettings

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route during the design visit.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

How fitting day works

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. First, you let us know about the room and what it needs. A rough sketch helps if you have one.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
  3. You receive a written quote, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home and check every door. They’re set level and scribed to the walls as they go in.

How to prepare

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Questions from Woodlands

I live near Isleworth station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Hounslow and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Does a conservation area in or near Woodlands affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How long will the cupboards take to fit?

How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes. We design the cupboard to keep the clearances and ventilation set out in the boiler maker’s instructions, and the doors open fully for servicing. Any work on the boiler itself is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Practical tips

Getting the most from fitted cupboards starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Go easy on new doors for a while
  • List what you want to store before the design visit
  • Think about how the cupboards will get in
  • Let us know about parking at the design visit

Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch up. A spray finish gives a smooth, even surface that cleans easily with a soft cloth. It’s worth keeping a record of the colour.

Before the design visit, think about what will go in each cupboard. A coat cupboard and a linen cupboard need quite different insides, and knowing this early saves changes later.

Why bespoke in Woodlands?

Off-the-shelf cupboards are quicker to get and normally cost less, and in a square room they can work well. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely sit flush. A fitted cupboard costs more but follows the room. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, and standalone units can lean or gap. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Where other trades come in

Not everything around fitted cupboards is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Plumbing for washing machines or sinks (your plumber)
  • Making good walls after other work
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.
