Fitted cupboards in Hounslow: how it works
We make our cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on what each part needs to do. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits shelves and drawer boxes. We finish them by spray painting in the workshop or by hand painting, in the colour you choose. We make fitted cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a cupboard for the meters with easy access and a utility room with proper storage.
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You get in touch and let us know whether the cupboard will house a boiler, meters or a fuse board.
- We visit to measure and plan the cupboard so meters, fuse boards and any boiler stay easy to reach. Boiler work itself is for a Gas Safe engineer.
- You receive a written quote for the cupboards.
- The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the access planned in.
- The cupboards are fitted and set level, and we check the access with you.
Quotes in Hounslow
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Tricky spaces in homes across Hounslow
Across Hounslow, flats and conversions rarely come with enough storage. Well-planned fitted cupboards can add storage while keeping the room usable, with sections sized for the stairs and lift.
In Hounslow, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 29%) and the years since 2000 (about 20%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. About 29% of homes in Hounslow date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Houses of that era often have a hallway wide enough for a coat and shoe cupboard, and a box room that can take more storage. 11 of the 25 places in Hounslow with their own pages here have their centre inside a conservation area, according to Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.
In London, the route into a home matters as much as the room, so we look at both at the measuring visit.
Hounslow: The wider area includes historic houses like Osterley House, about 1.6 miles north. If your own home is a period one, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves. For a flat near Hounslow station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.
How we price fitted cupboards
There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Doors and drawers, and how many
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It’s useful to talk about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.
Before the design visit
Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- The type of home and how the room is reached
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Where other trades come in
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:
- Any plumbing in a utility room
- Any gas work around the boiler
- Moving gas or electricity meters
Could you do it yourself?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Flats, conversions and lettings
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it during the design visit.
What it’s made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF gives a smooth surface for a painted finish, and the moisture-resistant grade copes with damper spots.
Shelves
Sagging shelves are avoidable, so we size each one for its span and load.
Common questions about fitted cupboards
Can I send photos before the visit?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
It’s made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the measuring visit.
Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?
Yes, as long as the design respects the boiler’s instructions. We allow for the clearances and ventilation it needs and keep access clear for the engineer.
Do you fit out utility rooms and boot rooms?
Yes, we plan the room around what needs storing, from coats and boots to laundry and cleaning things. We are carpenters, so plumbing and wiring are for your other trades.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.
What are your cupboards made from?
MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for shelves and drawer boxes. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in a colour you choose.
Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?
Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on.
