Is it time for fitted cupboards?

Alcoves and odd corners are another reason. We often build into recesses, corridor ends and corners that standard furniture cannot use, and make them useful.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
  • Cupboards that suit a period house
  • Storage for coats and shoes in the hallway
  • A cupboard for the meters with easy access

If you live near Kew Green, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

How we make fitted cupboards for Strand-on-the-Green

We build each fitted cupboard for the space it will live in. It runs from the floor to the ceiling, or to whatever height suits the spot, and it’s trimmed to the walls so there are no tricky gaps. Hallways, landings, utility rooms, boot rooms and alcoves all make good homes for one, with the inside planned around what you want to store. Typical reasons to get in touch are a neat cupboard around the boiler and cupboards for a utility or boot room; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Strand-on-the-Green, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the fitted cupboard designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

Strand-on-the-Green homes and fitted cupboards

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Strand-on-the-Green were built before 1919 (about 48%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 15%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. 16 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Strand-on-the-Green. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Hounslow is no exception. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul's Church, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. Near listed buildings like Zoffany House, under half a mile north-west of the centre of Strand-on-the-Green, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Strand-on-the-Green

I live near Chiswick station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you hide my gas and electricity meters?

Yes. We can build a cupboard that hides them neatly and still leaves them reachable. Moving them isn’t our work, as that is a job for your supplier or electrician.

What materials do you use for fitted cupboards?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.

What happens at the design visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

What affects the price in Strand-on-the-Green

There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The width and height of the space
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Let us know about parking during the design visit.

What to send when you get in touch

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form. You receive a written quote after the visit.

Materials and finishes

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribing is how a cupboard meets a wall that is not flat for a close fit.

Hand-painted finish

Some people like the character of a hand-painted finish in an older house. The colour is agreed with you.

How fitting day works

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. First, you tell us about the space and what you need to store. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. We visit, take careful measurements and go through the design with you.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the design, the materials and the finish, for you to read through.
  4. The cupboards are made in our workshop.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.

Preparing the room

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Arranging a design visit

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Advice

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
