Fitted cupboards in Lampton: what you get
Gas meters, electricity meters and fuse boards tend to be where you’d least like them, such as by the front door or in a hallway corner. We can build a cupboard that tidies them away and still keeps access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so we design doors or removable panels that make that easy. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about cupboards that suit a period house and a cupboard for a recess or odd corner.
Around Lampton, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the bay window at the front, the space under the stairs and the box room are the usual places to gain storage. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.
Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Flats, conversions and lettings
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.
Why people ask for fitted cupboards in Lampton
Some people want to hide a boiler, meter or fuse board. They’re rarely attractive, but they need to stay accessible, so a cupboard has to be designed around them. We plan the doors, panels and ventilation with that in mind.
Requests we hear often include:
- Tall cupboards where space is short
- Landing shelves for bedding and towels
- A utility room with proper storage
- A hallway cupboard for coats and shoes
If you live in a flat close to Hounslow station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
Choosing a carpenter
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
Honest limits
We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Moving or servicing a boiler
- Wiring for lights or sockets
- Plumbing for washing machines or sinks (your plumber)

How fitting works for fitted cupboards
At the end, we tidy up. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.
- You get in touch and let us know whether the cupboard will house a boiler, meters or a fuse board.
- At the design visit we measure up and note the clearances and ventilation the boiler manufacturer asks for. Boiler work itself is for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
- A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
- The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the access planned in.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Preparing the room
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
How to get a quote
To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and a quote in writing follows.
Advice
Questions from Lampton
Do you cover homes near Hounslow station?
Yes. We cover all of Hounslow and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Lampton?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
Making use of awkward spaces in Lampton
In the area around Lampton, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 31%) and the years since 2000 (about 27%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of Lampton, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. Where a home in Lampton is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Hounslow Congregational Church, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Osterley House, about 1.1 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way.

Tips worth knowing
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:
- Deal with any damp walls first
- Measure the route into the room along with the room itself
- Give the paint time to cure fully
- Keep boiler vents and meter access clear
Over time, you may want to move a shelf or add a rail. Shelves can be set at heights that suit you as your storage changes.
Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board in the space early. They shape the design, and it is easiest to plan for them at the start.
