Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in Old Oak Common
After a loft conversion, the new bedroom typically needs storage that suits the slopes. Wardrobes built under the slope use space that would otherwise sit empty.
Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:
- Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
- Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
- Empty alcoves in the bedroom
- A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use
The wider area includes historic houses such as Kelmscott House, about 2.5 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
Before you hire any carpenter
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Can you see real work of theirs?

The inside matters as much as the doors. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own. It helps to think about what you wear most before we meet. Most enquiries start with clothes with nowhere proper to go and several odd pieces where one run of storage would do, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
A large number of homes around Old Oak Common date from 2000 onwards, and in London many homes of that age are flats with compact bedrooms. Small rooms suit fitted furniture that uses the full height and the tricky corners. Boxed-in pipes and service risers can be built around, so nothing is wasted.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

How fitting day works
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so tell us what applies at the measuring visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You send us a few details about the room and the storage you need.
- At the design visit, we measure up and plan the doors and the inside with you. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
- You receive a written quote setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish, so you can see what’s included.
- We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
- We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.
How to prepare
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Questions we are often asked
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Old Oak Common?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Old Oak Common?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Where is the furniture made?
We make it in our workshop, to the design and sizes agreed after the design visit. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form.
How do I get a quote?
The first step is to use our contact form. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Walls and floors in older homes are seldom straight or level. A standalone wardrobe can lean, rock or show tapering gaps. We set fitted wardrobes level and scribe them to the walls and ceiling. Rooms in newer homes are often compact, and standard depths can take too much floor, while fitted furniture can be made shallower where space is tight. It still uses the full height.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Old Oak Common
- Made for your room, not a standard size
- Edges scribed to follow your walls
- We visit, measure and talk through the design before we quote
- Workshop-made and fitted by us

Fitted wardrobes in Old Oak Common: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Old Oak Common were built since 2000 (about 42%) and before 1919 (about 32%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Part of Old Oak Common is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. A van working in Old Oak Common will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Tips worth knowing
New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
- Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
- Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
- Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. For the first while, open and close the doors gently and avoid knocking hangers against the inside.
Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose and adjust any door that starts to catch.
Flats, conversions and lettings
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check during the design visit.
