Wall beds in Single Street: what you get
In a studio flat, a wall bed can make the main room feel much larger. By day, the room is a living space, and at night it becomes a bedroom. Storage and shelving can go on either side or above to make the most of the wall. We make wall beds from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about hiding the bed when it’s not in use and a flexible room for a growing family.
A loft conversion is a common way to add a bedroom to a semi or an interwar house, and the slope can take storage cut to its angle. A big part of the housing around Single Street is interwar, semi-detached or detached. We work in lofts that are already converted, and the furniture is scribed to the slope and the walls.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

Could you do it yourself?
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

What else we make in Single Street
Single Street homes and wall beds
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 29% of the housing in the area around Single Street, with about 25% built between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Single Street include Church of St Peter and St Paul (Grade II*), under half a mile east, and Bell Cottage (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Bromley are set locally. If your road in Single Street falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Tell us what the parking is like at the design visit.
Living in a block of flats near Chelsfield station? Then the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. The wider area includes historic houses like Down House, about 1 mile north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. If your children go to Cudham Church of England Primary School or a school nearby, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Where other trades come in
Not everything around wall beds is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Making good the walls after other work
- Building work to make a wall sound
- Wiring for lights or chargers

Why bespoke in Single Street?
A standard bed is simple and needs no mechanism, which is a fair point in its favour. Where the room needs to be more than a bedroom, a wall bed earns its place every day. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Why choose us
- A design visit, then a quote in writing
- A spray or hand-painted finish
- Edges scribed to follow your walls

Materials and finishes
Bed mechanism housing
We build the housing to suit the mechanism, fixed securely as its maker specifies. When the bed is up, the front looks like cupboard doors.
Shelves
We can add shelving around the bed for books, boxes or display.
From workshop to your room
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it’s worth mentioning during the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.
- To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
- We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
- You receive a quote in writing for the wall bed and any storage.
- We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
- We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.
Getting ready for fitting day
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Related advice
Questions we’re often asked
Can you make wall beds for a home in Single Street?
Yes. Single Street is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details.
Do you cover homes near Chelsfield station?
Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Does my lease affect fitted furniture?
Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.
What finishes do you offer?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
