Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Single Street?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Is Single Street in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes. Single Street is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we can’t advise on it.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

That is normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Built-in bookshelves in Single Street

Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. For a long shelf of books, we use a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support part way, or we divide the run with uprights. We often use birch plywood, which is stiff and strong under heavy books. People normally come to us about shelves deep enough for large books and storage for children’s books and games, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around Single Street, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. Built-in bookshelves can fill the alcoves, run the length of a wall or frame the chimney breast, depending on how you use the room. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Caring for painted furniture

Getting the most from built-in bookshelves starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Let us know where the heaviest things will go
  • Consider deeper cupboards at the bottom
  • Estimate how many metres of books you have

On an outside wall, do not pack books tight against the back so air can move. Watch for any musty smell or marks.

Store the heaviest items low down and use a step rather than the shelves to reach up.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the design visit.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Could you do it yourself?

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Single Street

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 29% of the housing in the streets around Single Street, with about 25% built between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Single Street, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Peter and St Paul (Grade II*), less than half a mile east, and Bell Cottage (Grade II), under half a mile north-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Bromley are set locally. If your road in Single Street falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Down House, about 1 mile north-west. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For a flat near Chelsfield station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. For families living near Cudham Church of England Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Single Street is about 5 miles north of Orpington, part of the London Borough of Bromley. Anywhere in Single Street, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a quote in writing, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Single Street is one of 49 places on our list for Bromley.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

For carcasses and fixed shelves, birch plywood gives a rigid frame, and birch plywood grips its fixings well.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF gives crisp edges and smooth faces that take a painted finish evenly. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted work.

What happens on fitting day

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, a piece at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and let us know what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
  2. We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
  3. Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
  4. In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
  5. We fit it in your home with fixings that suit the wall, and a hand-painted finish, if you chose one, follows on site.

Preparing the room

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
