Fitted cupboards for homes in The Hyde

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 48% of the housing in the neighbourhood around The Hyde, with about 26% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There’s a conservation area within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of The Hyde, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. Your council can advise if you are unsure. About 48% of homes in the area around The Hyde date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Interwar houses often have room in the hall and the box room for fitted cupboards.

If you live in a period home close to St Matthias the Apostle church, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. Living in a block of flats near Hendon station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Near listed buildings like Church of the Holy Innocents, under half a mile west of the centre of The Hyde, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

How we make fitted cupboards for The Hyde

We fit fitted cupboards in The Hyde and across London. We begin with a design visit to measure and go through the design, followed by a written quote. Once agreed, we make the cupboards in our workshop and fit them in your home. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you’ll know before we start. People usually come to us about a utility room with proper storage and cupboards that suit a period house; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Walls in houses from between the wars are normally straighter than in older ones, but seldom perfect. Much of the housing around The Hyde is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so we still scribe every piece to the wall. Each piece is levelled on site, so doors, lids and drawers line up.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

What it’s made from

Shelves

Adjustable shelves let you change the layout later if your needs change.

Spray-painted finish

Spray-painted cupboards arrive finished, so there is less to do on site.

Where other trades come in

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Plumbing for washing machines or sinks (your plumber)
  • Building work or structural changes
  • Work on a boiler, which is for a Gas Safe engineer

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Questions we are often asked

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Is parking a problem for fitting in The Hyde?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

What happens at the design visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

It’s made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways during the design visit.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you get in touch through our contact form.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.

Could you do it yourself?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

From workshop to your room

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it is worth mentioning at the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You let us know where the cupboards should go.
  2. We visit to measure up and talk through the design.
  3. You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each cupboard is set level on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the wall.
  6. The spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the job, and new paintwork should be treated gently while it cures.

Before we arrive
