The Hyde Fitted Wardrobes

Fitted wardrobes in The Hyde: floor-to-ceiling wardrobes built to the shape of your bedroom. Each piece is designed at a visit to your home, built in our workshop and fitted by us.

  • An tricky slope in a loft bedroom
  • No space in front for doors to swing
  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

Sometimes it is a change in how a room is used. Built-in storage makes the room work for its new role without crowding the floor. Inside, the layout can change as needs change.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve include:

  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • A bedroom that never feels tidy
  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes

For a family home near The Hyde School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Have they thought about parking near you?

About our fitted wardrobes in The Hyde

Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. Others work around a window, sometimes with a dressing table or a window seat between them. We plan the layout so the room still feels open. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a tight bedroom where doors get in the way and mismatched bedroom furniture.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around The Hyde, bedrooms are often straightforward shapes, sometimes with a chimney breast or a bay. Fitted furniture can run along the longest wall, with the inside arranged to suit you. If the loft has been converted, sloping ceilings bring their own options.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Fitted wardrobes in The Hyde: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 48% of the housing in the neighbourhood around The Hyde, with about 26% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. A conservation area lies within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of The Hyde, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. More than a third of the homes in the area around The Hyde (about 48%) date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead.

If you live near West Hendon Playing Fields, keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of the Holy Innocents, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

The Hyde is in the London Borough of Barnet, about 3 miles north-east of Finchley. The Hyde is part of the area we cover. Across Barnet, we cover The Hyde.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check during the design visit.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

How it is made

Plinths and scribe strips

Most fitted wardrobes in older homes need scribing at the sides and top. It is what makes the wardrobe look built in.

Birch plywood

Drawers get heavy use, so we often make the boxes from birch plywood, so they hold their shape.

Questions from The Hyde

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Hendon station?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in The Hyde?

Yes, we work across Barnet, The Hyde included, and across the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

How long will the fitting take?

The fitting depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The wardrobes are made at our workshop first.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and a quote in writing follows.

Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Sloping ceilings are common in loft conversions and fitted storage suits them well. We measure the slope carefully at the measuring visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

How fitting day works

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is normally more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. A quote in writing follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
