Making use of awkward spaces in Colindale

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Colindale were built since 2000 (about 50%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 24%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List records 8 entries within half a mile of the centre of Colindale. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 61% of households in the area around Colindale live in purpose-built flats, the 2021 Census shows. For a flat, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

If you live near Sunny Hill Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place. For a flat near Hendon station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Fitted cupboards in Colindale

Landings often have a corner or a stretch of wall that does nothing. A fitted cupboard there can hold towels, bedding and the things that never quite find a home, with shelves spaced to suit what goes on them. We plan it so doors open without catching the stairs or the banister. If you’re living with a boiler cupboard that keeps access clear and a hallway cupboard for coats and shoes, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

A large number of homes around Colindale date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes rarely come with much storage. Halls, landings and the space beneath the stairs are where fitted storage can help. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on timber or metal studs, so the fixings are chosen for that.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What it costs

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Before the design visit

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What happens on fitting day

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Any hand painting can be finished on site.

  1. We start with a short note from you about the space and what it needs to hold. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. We visit, take careful measurements and go through the design with you. For a boiler cupboard, we plan for the clearances and ventilation in the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. The cupboards are made in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.

What prompts fitted cupboards in Colindale

Standard cupboards don’t sit well in many period homes. Uneven floors and walls that aren’t square leave gaps at the sides and top that collect dust and look untidy. A built-in cupboard follows the room instead.

We are often asked to help with:

  • A cupboard for the meters with easy access
  • Floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat
  • A hallway cupboard for coats and shoes
  • Cupboards for a utility or boot room

For families living near Colindale Primary School, fitted cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

How to choose a carpenter in London

Common questions about fitted cupboards

My home in Colindale is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do you cover homes near Hendon station?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Can you fit cupboards to walls that aren’t straight?

Yes, it’s something we deal with all the time. Few walls in a period house are straight, so we scribe and level every cupboard.

Can a fitted cupboard cover the meters and fuse board?

Yes. A cupboard can tidy them away without getting in the way of access. We do not move meters or fuse boards; that’s for your supplier or an electrician.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Before and after fitting day

These points come up often when people plan fitted cupboards. They help whatever the room:

  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Measure the route into the room as well as the room
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Make a note of what needs a home

Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch up. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and small marks can often be cleaned off with a soft cloth. It’s worth keeping a record of the colour.

Before the design visit, think about what will go in each cupboard. Coats, shoes, cleaning things and bedding all need different depths and fittings, and knowing this early saves changes later.

What it is made from

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the cupboard off the floor and hides adjustable feet. Scribe strips are trimmed to follow the wall.

Moisture-resistant MDF

For painted doors and panels, moisture-resistant MDF is our usual choice, as it stays stable and finishes evenly.
