Fitted home offices in The Hyde: what you get

A fitted home office gives your work a proper place in the house. We design and make built-in desks, shelving and storage for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and the space under the eaves, shaped by the way you work. For a home in The Hyde, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. We make home offices from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about shelving that bows under the load and a room with two jobs to do.

Around The Hyde, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the spare bedroom or dining room often doubles as the office. A built-in desk with doors that close over it lets the room go back to its other job at the end of the day. We plan the cable routes around your sockets.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

FAQs: fitted home offices in The Hyde

Can you make fitted home offices for a home in The Hyde?

Yes, The Hyde is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Barnet and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Does a conservation area in or near The Hyde affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Is it possible to have a desk under the eaves?

Yes, in a loft that’s already converted. We place the desk so you can sit and stand without hitting the slope, with storage built into the lower parts of the slope. We don’t carry out loft conversions.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

How fitting works for fitted home offices

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Home offices arrive in sections and are assembled in place.

  1. You get in touch and describe the space you want to work in.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and plan a desk and storage that follow the shape of the room.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each piece is set level and scribed to the walls, so there are no gaps along the edges.
  6. Your spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the office.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Starting with a design visit

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

How we price fitted home offices

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • How big the furniture is
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The internal fittings
  • How many doors and drawers there are

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Helping us understand the room

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

The Hyde homes and fitted home offices

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 48% of the housing in the area around The Hyde, with about 26% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of The Hyde include Church of the Holy Innocents (Grade II), under half a mile west, and Church of St John (Grade II), about 0.6 miles south-east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If you live on or close to a main road in The Hyde, let us know during the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

For families living near The Hyde School, closed cupboards above a desk keep work papers and school books apart. If your home is one of the older houses near St Matthias the Apostle church, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.

The Hyde is about 3 miles north-east of Finchley, within the London Borough of Barnet. Anywhere in The Hyde, the process is the same: a design visit, a written quote, furniture built in our workshop and fitting in your home. Our Barnet coverage includes The Hyde.

Here we cover the NW9 and NW4 postcode area for fitted home offices. You’ll find streets here such as Alpini Road, Catkin Road and Garrick Road, and we cover homes on all of them for fitted home offices. The Hyde sits close to the A5. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the measuring visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. If you are just outside The Hyde, we also cover West Hendon (1 mile north), Colindale (1 mile north), The Burroughs (1 mile north-east), Hendon (1 mile east) and Staples Corner (1 mile south-east). We also make fitted home offices in nearby places like Finchley (3 miles north-east), Barnet (5 miles north-east), Burnt Oak (2 miles north), East Finchley (3 miles east), Whetstone (4 miles north-east) and Edgware (3 miles north).

What fitted home offices can’t fix

Not everything around fitted home offices is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:

  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Changes to the structure of the house
  • Setting up computers, screens or networks

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Filing drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Cable routes
  • Built-in desks
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Is it time for fitted home offices?

Trailing cables are one of the things people most want to sort. Planned routes through the desk keep cables out of sight. Any new sockets are for your electrician, and we design around them.

Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:

  • Glare from a window on the screen
  • Files and folders piling up
  • Shelving that bows under the load
  • Work things on show in the evening

If you live in a flat close to Hendon station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
