Hammersmith Fitted Cupboards

In Hammersmith, we design fitted cupboards around the room you actually have. Your fitted cupboard is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.

About our fitted cupboards in Hammersmith

Many landings have a spare corner or wall that could work harder. We can turn it into a linen cupboard, or storage for bedding and spare towels, with shelves spaced to suit what goes on them. The doors are planned so they open cleanly on a narrow landing. People normally come to us about using the full height of a room and a hallway cupboard for coats and shoes, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are typically solid brick, which can be cold, so a gap and ventilation behind fitted storage help avoid condensation. That matters around Hammersmith, where a large share of the homes are that old. Damp should be sorted before anything is fitted against the wall.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Fitting day, step by step

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it’s useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. First, you let us know about the space and what you need to store.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the design, the materials and the finish, for you to read through.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and shelves in our workshop.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

How to get a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Looking after your furniture

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Think about what each cupboard will hold
  • Measure the route into the room not just the room
  • Don’t store things against the boiler
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls

If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can normally be touched in. A spray finish gives a smooth, even surface that cleans easily with a soft cloth. It is worth keeping a record of the colour.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease first. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building, and it is best done early.

How it is made

Birch plywood

For heavily loaded cupboards, birch plywood makes a sturdy carcass, such as a linen or utility cupboard.

Spray-painted finish

We spray paint in the workshop for a smooth, factory-like finish. The colour is agreed with you.

Is bespoke worth it?

Neither choice is right for every home. For a square alcove and a tight budget, a ready-made unit may do the job. Where the room is tricky, the walls are uneven or you want the cupboard to look built in, fitted joinery is usually the better answer. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that do not meet the skirting. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

What affects the price in Hammersmith

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • How many doors and drawers there are

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It helps to talk about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

Getting in touch

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Questions from Hammersmith

Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Hammersmith?

Yes, we work across Hammersmith and Fulham, Hammersmith included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details.

Do you cover homes near Kensington Olympia station?

Yes. We cover all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form.

How long does fitting take?

How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes. The cupboard is built around the space and ventilation the boiler’s instructions ask for, with doors that open wide for servicing. Any work on the boiler itself is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.

Will a fitted cupboard work on a sloping floor?

Yes. Each cupboard is trimmed to the shape of the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth. That is one of the main reasons to choose fitted cupboards in an older house.
