From workshop to your room

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
  3. Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
  4. In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Getting a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

How we make built-in bookshelves for Walham Green

A built-in bookcase is shelving made for one wall, one alcove or one room. It runs from wall to wall and, if you like, up to the ceiling. For a home in Walham Green, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through your books. Typical reasons to get in touch are books with nowhere left to go and a bare wall above a doorway; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Around Walham Green, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in London most homes of that age are Victorian or Edwardian. Houses of that age normally have a chimney breast in the front and back reception rooms, with an alcove either side, which gives built-in bookshelves an obvious place to go. Walls are rarely flat, so each piece is scribed to the plaster and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Questions we’re often asked

My home in Walham Green is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Built-in bookshelves are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Walham Green?

Yes. We cover all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London, and Walham Green is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Will built-in bookshelves sag?

Sag comes down to span, depth and load. We size the shelves and use birch plywood where strength matters, with supports or shorter bays on long runs. Spreading heavy books helps too.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.

Can you build bookshelves over a radiator?

It’s possible with some thought. The heat has to rise and move into the room, so we plan an opening or gap and never box it in. Some people prefer to keep shelves clear of it or ask a plumber to move it.

Built-in living-room furniture in Walham Green

Homes built before 1919 make up about 54% of the housing in the area around Walham Green, with about 21% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Part of Walham Green is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. So a van fitting furniture in Walham Green normally needs a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay arranged through the council. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

If your children go to Chelsea Independent College or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. Carlyle's House, about 1 mile north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live in a period home close to Church of St John, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

Honest limits

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Redecorating, which is for your decorator
  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
  • Relocating radiators or pipework

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the bookcase is fitted. Small marks on it are simple to touch up, and it suits a traditional room.

Shelves

Depth is set around what you keep, from shallow paperback shelves to deeper ones for records.

What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The width and height of the space
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Parking and unloading on your street

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Helping us understand the room

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Approximate measurements of the space

Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

With off-the-shelf shelving, you are limited to the maker’s finishes. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, to suit the room. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote.
