Ilford Fitted Cupboards

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted cupboards in Ilford starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving
  • Making use of an awkward alcove or corner
  • Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing

About our fitted cupboards in Ilford

Gas meters, electricity meters and fuse boards tend to be where you’d least like them, under the stairs, in a hallway or beside the front door. A fitted cupboard can hide them neatly and still keeps access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so we design doors or removable panels that make that easy. We make fitted cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about storage for coats and shoes in the hallway and hiding meters and a fuse board neatly.

Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of homes around Ilford are that old. Each piece is scribed and levelled on site so it looks straight in a room that is not. Picture rails, skirting and cornices are worked around rather than removed, and the paint colour is agreed with you.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Storage in Ilford homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Ilford were built before 1919 (about 58%) and since 2000 (about 20%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Ilford, Historic England’s list includes Chapel (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-west, and Baptist Church and Institute (Grade II), less than half a mile east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Around Ilford, about 58% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Redbridge as a whole, about 27%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of fitted cupboards.

If you live in a flat close to Ilford station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If you live near South Park, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

What affects the price in Ilford

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • How square the room is
  • Parking near your home
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • How big the furniture is

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Getting in touch

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

From workshop to your room

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it’s useful to tell us at the measuring visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.

  1. You contact us about fitted cupboards.
  2. We visit to measure the space and the route in from the street, including the stairs and doorways.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. In our workshop we build the cupboards in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring the sections in and fit them, scribed to the walls. The finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand on site.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Getting a quote

You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

When is bespoke worth it?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

What prompts fitted cupboards in Ilford

Most people come to us because things have nowhere to go. Coats end up over the banister and shoes spread across the hall. A fitted cupboard gives those things a proper home and leaves the room around it clear.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Cupboards that suit a period house
  • A boiler cupboard that keeps access clear
  • Using the full height of a room
  • A hallway cupboard for coats and shoes

For an older house near St Alban's Church, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep.

What to check before you book

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room

Looking after your furniture

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Measure the route into the room along with the room itself
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Deal with any damp walls first
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls

If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can normally be touched in. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and small marks can often be cleaned off with a soft cloth. It’s worth keeping a record of the colour.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease first. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building, and it’s best done early.

Questions we’re often asked

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Ilford?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

I live near Ilford station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Redbridge and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.

How much time does fitting need?

The time the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. Your lease is something we cannot advise on, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.
