Fitted cupboards in Aldersbrook

A fitted cupboard is built for one space and nowhere else. It runs from the floor to the ceiling, or to whatever height suits the spot, and it’s trimmed to the walls so there are no tricky gaps. We fit them in hallways, on landings, in utility and boot rooms and in alcoves, with the inside planned around what you want to store. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about tidying away the gas and electricity meters and somewhere for coats, shoes and bags.

Hallways in period terraces are often long and narrow, with the stairs rising along one wall. Around Aldersbrook, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so depth matters as much as width wherever storage goes. Even shallow storage can hold a lot without narrowing the way through.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

A ready-made cupboard rarely suits a boiler or meter. Clearances, ventilation and access all matter and fitted joinery can be designed around them. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.

What you get with us

  • Built around your room
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • A design visit, then a quote in writing

Fitting day, step by step

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. First, you tell us about the room and what it needs.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and the layout inside, with a note of anything that must stay reachable.
  3. A written quote is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are made in our workshop.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home.

Is it time for fitted cupboards?

Moving into a flat often shows how little built-in storage there is. A cupboard in the hallway or a spare recess can change how the home works, because it can reach right up to the ceiling.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Built-in storage that matches the woodwork
  • Storage for towels and bedding
  • Making use of an awkward alcove or corner
  • A boiler cupboard that keeps access clear

For families living near Aldersbrook Primary School, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room

Flat-pack or bespoke?

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Aldersbrook homes and fitted cupboards

In the neighbourhood around Aldersbrook, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 55%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Aldersbrook, 7 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The share of homes built before 1919 around Aldersbrook, about 55%, is well above the figure for Redbridge as a whole, about 27%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Living in a block of flats near Wanstead Park station? Pricing fitted cupboards in Aldersbrook

Several things affect the price:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How square the room is
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The overall size of the piece

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What we need to know

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • What the furniture needs to hold

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Aldersbrook

Is parking a problem for fitting in Aldersbrook?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Can you box in my boiler with a fitted cupboard?

Yes, provided the cupboard keeps to the boiler maker’s instructions. We plan the space and ventilation around it and keep access clear for the engineer.

Can you fit cupboards to walls that are not straight?

Yes, that’s part of the job. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so every cupboard is scribed and levelled.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
