Fitted cupboards in Loxford

Bespoke fitted cupboards or ready-made?

There is a place for both. For a square alcove and a tight budget, a ready-made unit may do the job. Where the room is awkward, the walls are uneven or you want the cupboard to look built in, fitted joinery is normally the better answer. Walls and floors are seldom perfectly flat in any home, and standalone units show it with gaps and wobbles. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room as they go in.

There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.

What you get with us

  • Edges scribed to follow your walls
  • Finished by spray or by hand

Fitted cupboards in Loxford

In many London hallways, space is tight, so a cupboard has to earn its place. We can make a shallow cupboard for coats, shoes and bags that still leaves room to pass, with hooks, a rail or shelves inside. A bench with a lift-up lid or drawers under it is another option, so there is somewhere to sit by the door. People normally come to us about a neat cupboard around the boiler and hiding meters and a fuse board neatly; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In an older home, panelled doors and painted mouldings may suit; in a newer one, plain flat doors may fit better. For a home in Loxford, door styles are talked through at the design visit. You choose the colour, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

How we price fitted cupboards

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

What we need to know

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • How you want to use the space
  • Where you live, with the postcode

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Flats, leases and landlords

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t advise on your lease.

How it’s made

Birch plywood

Shelves that carry weight need a strong board, and birch plywood is a good fit. Span, depth and load all matter.

Hand-painted finish

If you’d like the cupboards painted to match a wall or the woodwork, hand painting on site works well and is easy to refresh later.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

I live near Barking station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Redbridge and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Loxford?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some need consent for alterations. Your lease is something we cannot advise on, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.

Making use of tricky spaces in Loxford

In the area around Loxford, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 39%) and the years since 2000 (about 24%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Loxford, Historic England’s list includes Barking Station Booking Hall (Grade II), about 0.6 miles south. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If you live on or close to a main road in Loxford, let us know during the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

For an older house near St Luke's Church, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. Eastbury Manor House, about 1.2 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. For a family home near Woodlands Primary School, fitted cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

What happens on fitting day

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the space.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home and check every door. They’re set level and scribed to the walls as they go in.

How to prepare

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

How to get a quote

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, message us from the contact page with a few details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
