How we make fitted wardrobes for Anerley
What goes inside is where a fitted wardrobe earns its place. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own, so nothing is squashed and no height is wasted. It’s worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. If your home has clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms and an awkward slope in a loft bedroom, that’s what fitted wardrobes are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
In a Victorian bedroom, the chimney breast normally sits on a side wall, with a recess to each side. That layout is worth knowing around Anerley, where a large share of homes were built before 1919. Storage can go in each recess, with a bridge of cupboards over the chimney breast, leaving the breast itself clear. Any capped chimney is kept ventilated.
You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Anerley?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Anerley?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?
Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings. We measure the slope carefully during the design visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.
Do you cover areas outside London?
No. Our work is in London only: every London borough and the City of London.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

How we price fitted wardrobes
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- How square the room is
- The internal fittings
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Fitted wardrobes in Anerley: local notes
About 47% of the homes in the streets around Anerley went up before 1919, and about 20% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. There are 13 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Anerley. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Bromley is inside it. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Anerley. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.
Near listed buildings like Swedenborgian Church, under half a mile north-west of the centre of Anerley, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Kingswood House, about 1.3 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If you live in a period home close to St Paul's, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

What it is made from
Spray-painted finish
Spraying in the workshop means the doors come to your home finished. Treat them gently while the paint cures fully.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, so we use it for doors, end panels and the faces you see. It’s a sensible choice against a colder external wall.
From workshop to your room
You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.
- You send us a few details about the room and the storage you need.
- We come to measure the room, check the walls and ceiling and agree the layout.
- You receive a quote in writing setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish, so you can see what’s included.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the room’s measurements, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
- We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
Getting a quote
The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, use our contact form.
Advice
Is bespoke worth it?
Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, so there is typically a gap on top and at the ends. A fitted wardrobe fills the space wall to wall and up to the ceiling. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Furniture made for the space fills it.
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit.
