Fitted wardrobes in Gipsy Hill, Lambeth

We make fitted wardrobes for homes in Gipsy Hill, designed around the room you have. We design your fitted wardrobe at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • A room too narrow for hinged doors
  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall

What prompts fitted wardrobes in Gipsy Hill

Some bedrooms are hard to furnish. A sloping ceiling, a chimney breast, a low window or a door in the wrong place can defeat standard furniture. We shape fitted wardrobes around those features.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • Mismatched bedroom furniture
  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed
  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall

The wider area includes historic houses like Kingswood House, about 0.5 miles north. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

How we make fitted wardrobes for Gipsy Hill

A fitted wardrobe is built into the room itself, running floor to ceiling and wall to wall where that suits the room. That leaves no gap above to gather dust and no wasted space at the sides. If you’re planning fitted wardrobes in Gipsy Hill, we start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need. Most enquiries start with mismatched bedroom furniture and storage boxes stacked under the bed; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around Gipsy Hill, where many homes date from the post-war decades, the bedroom may be modest in size but regular in shape. Where there isn’t much space in front, a careful layout helps everything fit. Concrete and blockwork walls need fixings chosen for them.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf wardrobes are cheaper to buy and easy to take with you. That is a real advantage if you’re renting or moving soon. Built-in wardrobes become part of the house and are made for that room alone. Post-war rooms are often compact, and standard furniture sizes waste space at the ends and the top, while fitted furniture fills the space. Every width is made for the room.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Gipsy Hill

In the streets around Gipsy Hill, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 35%) and before 1919 (about 29%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 12 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Gipsy Hill. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If you live on or close to a main road in Gipsy Hill, let us know at the measuring visit. We will plan where the van can stop.

If you live near Long Meadow, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. For a family home near Paxton Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Does a conservation area in or near Gipsy Hill affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Gipsy Hill?

Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London, and Gipsy Hill is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

How is the price worked out?

Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

What happens at the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

What you pay depends on:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The width and height of the space
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.

What we need to know

These details help when you contact us:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Fitting day, step by step

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Communal stairs in older blocks often have tight landings, so the size of each section is set by the stairs as well as the lift. Where the building has a caretaker or managing agent, it helps to tell them before fitting day. We cover the floors in shared areas on the way in.

  1. You send us some details about the room and the storage you need.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up and plan the doors and the inside with you. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the wardrobes.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
  5. We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

Before we arrive

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Let us know about parking near your home

Ask for a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote for you to look over. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Birch plywood

Wardrobe shelves can carry more weight than you’d think. Birch plywood helps keep them straight.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface on large doors. It suits a crisp, modern look as well as a classic panelled door.
