Walk-in wardrobes in Anerley, Bromley

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on walk-in wardrobes in Anerley starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • Room for a growing wardrobe
  • Separate space for two people’s clothes
  • A dressing area in part of a bedroom

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Anerley

Beyond the hanging, drawers, shelves and shoe storage do a lot of the work. Folded knitwear sits well on shelves, smaller things go in drawers and shoes can have racks or shelves of their own. If the room allows, we can include a dressing table. We make walk-in wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are shelves for shoes and bags and hanging for coats, dresses and shirts.

Older bedrooms typically have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Anerley date from then. That height can be used, with fitted furniture taken up to the cornice and top cupboards for occasional things. Picture rails, skirting boards and coving are met neatly or cut around.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Bedrooms in Anerley: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Anerley, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 20%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Anerley include Swedenborgian Church (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west, and Crystal Palace Lower Level Station (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Purpose-built flats are more common around Anerley than across Bromley: about 41% of households, against about 23%, based on Census 2021. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.

For a flat near Anerley station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. The wider area includes historic houses like Kingswood House, about 1.3 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Anerley station?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

My house in Anerley is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

We plan the route in at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Tips worth knowing

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Line up your electrician for any new lights
  • Let air move through the space
  • Think about long versus double hanging

Store heavy things on lower shelves and spread the weight along the rails. That keeps the hanging and shelves in good shape.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

What affects the price in Anerley

Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How square the room is
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The overall size of the piece

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Getting in touch

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Approximate measurements of the space

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which matters for drawers and long shelves. The edge can be left on show or painted.

Shelves

We plan shelving for knitwear, bags and things you use less often. Spans and depths are sized so they do not sag.

Fitting day, step by step

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You tell us about the room and what you want to store.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build everything in our workshop.
  5. We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

Before we arrive

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Getting a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

Is it time for walk-in wardrobes?

Some people want a calmer bedroom. Moving clothes into a separate space leaves the bedroom simpler and quieter to look at.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Separate space for two people’s clothes
  • Shelves for shoes and bags
  • A dressing area in part of a bedroom
  • A bedroom without crowded wardrobes

For an older house near St Paul's, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

What to check before you book

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
