Need fitted wardrobes in Penge?
Questions from Penge
My home in Penge is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Is Penge in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?
Yes. Penge is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
How long will the fitting take?
The fitting depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.
Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?
We plan the sections around the route into your flat, then assembled in the bedroom. Let us know about any concierge or lift booking rules.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?
Yes. Building around the bed uses a wall that often goes unused, with wardrobes at the sides and cupboards overhead. We measure the bed and the room at the design visit.
How we make fitted wardrobes for Penge
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and clothes pressed against a cold wall can lead to condensation. We allow for ventilation behind and within wardrobes on external walls, which helps keep mould away. Moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice there too. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are several odd pieces where one run of storage would do and clothes with nowhere proper to go.
Older London houses often have sash windows, and their position, along with any shutters, affects where furniture can go. If your home is one of the many around Penge built before 1919, the layout lets the sash open fully and keeps the light unblocked. Doors on fitted pieces are hung to clear the bed and any radiator.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
What prompts fitted wardrobes in Penge
A spare room turning into a guest room or a child’s room is another reason. Built-in storage makes the room work for its new role while leaving space to move. Inside, the layout can change as needs change.
We are often asked to help with:
- Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
- Wasted space beside the chimney breast
- Clothes with nowhere proper to go
- An tricky slope in a loft bedroom
The wider area includes historic houses like Kingswood House, about 1.4 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Penge
About 47% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Penge went up before 1919, and about 20% between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Penge, Historic England’s list includes The White House (Grade II), under half a mile north-east, and Church of St John the Evangelist (Grade II), less than half a mile east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 41% of households in the neighbourhood around Penge live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
For an older house near Church of St John the Evangelist, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. Living in a block of flats near Penge West station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
To be fair, modular wardrobe systems are easy to reconfigure. A bespoke interior is planned around what you own, and we can include adjustable shelves where you want flexibility. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.
We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, use our contact form.

Fitting day, step by step
In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.
- You contact us with a short note about the room and the wardrobes you have in mind.
- We come to measure the room, check the walls and ceiling and agree the layout. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
- You receive a written quote setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish.
- We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
- We fit them in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls.
Preparing the room
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
