Fitted cupboards in Anerley

Boxing in a boiler is a job that needs care. The boiler maker’s instructions set out the clearances and ventilation it needs, and the cupboard is built to respect them. Doors open wide enough for servicing, while any work on the boiler is for a Gas Safe engineer. People typically come to us about a cupboard for the meters with easy access and somewhere for coats, shoes and bags, and the answer is built in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around Anerley, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and houses of that age are full of tricky spaces: the space under the stairs, the bay at the front, the alcoves, the hallway recesses and, where the loft has been converted, the eaves. That is where fitted storage comes in.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

When is bespoke worth it?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Tips worth knowing

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Deal with any damp walls first
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Let us know how parking works on your street
  • Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early

Once the cupboards are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. At first, go easy on the doors and shelves and avoid heavy cleaning. In time, a damp cloth and a little mild soap keeps them clean.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease first. We cannot advise on your lease, and it is best done early.

What happens on fitting day

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the space and anything in it that needs access is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and note the clearances and ventilation the boiler manufacturer asks for. Boiler work itself is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.
  3. A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the access planned in.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Getting a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Spray-painted finish

Spray-painted cupboards arrive finished, so there’s less to do on site.

Fitted storage in Anerley

Homes built before 1919 make up about 47% of the housing in the area around Anerley, with about 20% built between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List records 13 entries within half a mile of the centre of Anerley. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul's, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. Living in a block of flats near Anerley station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Questions we are often asked

Can you fit fitted cupboards to the uneven walls of an older house in Anerley?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Anerley?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

How long will the cupboards take to fit?

How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk it through at the measuring visit.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Do pictures help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

What are the cupboards made of?

Our cupboards are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

What prompts fitted cupboards in Anerley

Most people come to us because things have nowhere to go. Coats pile up on the newel post, shoes gather by the door and the vacuum lives in a corner. A cupboard built for the space gives everything a place and leaves the room around it clear.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Tall cupboards where space is short
  • A cupboard for the meters with easy access
  • Storage for towels and bedding
  • Making use of an awkward alcove or corner

If you live near Crystal Palace Dinosaurs, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.
