Fitted wardrobes in Cheam: local notes
Homes built between 1973 and 1999 make up about 31% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Cheam, with about 27% built between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List records 7 entries within half a mile of the centre of Cheam. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. We can then plan where the van will stop.
If you live in a flat close to Cheam station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If you live near Howell Hill, fitted wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. If your children go to Glaisdale School or a school nearby, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.
Cheam is about 1 mile north-east of Sutton, part of the London Borough of Sutton. We design and make fitted wardrobes for homes in Cheam, as part of our work in every London borough. Cheam is one of 17 places on our list for Sutton.
Every home in SM2, SM3 and SM1 is within our area for fitted wardrobes, from the main roads to the quieter streets. Whether you live on a street like Wray Road, York Road and The Avenue or on one nearby, we can visit to measure up for fitted wardrobes. We also cover North Cheam (2 miles north). Other parts of Sutton we cover include Carshalton (2 miles north-east), The Wrythe (3 miles north-east), Wallington (3 miles north-east), Benhilton (2 miles north), Sutton Common (3 miles north) and Rosehill (3 miles north-east).
Around Cheam
Around Cheam, we cover homes near Avenue Primary Academy and Overton Grange School and the streets around them. The closest station to Cheam is Cheam station, roughly 0.6 miles north of the centre. A little further out are Cockney Museum (1.8 miles north-west) and Sutton Hospital (0.8 miles east). For a walk, there’s Belmont Pastures.
About our fitted wardrobes in Cheam
Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. It turns an awkward corner into storage. Typical reasons to get in touch are space under the eaves going to waste and damp or musty clothes against an external wall; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Many 1930s houses have had a loft conversion, adding a bedroom under a sloping ceiling, and the slope can take storage cut to its angle. Around Cheam, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large part of the housing. We work in lofts that are already converted, with each piece scribed to the slope and set level.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the fitted wardrobe designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

What else we make in Cheam
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
How fitting day works
Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.
- You contact us with a few details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
- At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you.
- We send a written quote with the layout, materials and finish, ready for you to read through.
- We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.
Preparing the room
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

How it is made
Plinths and scribe strips
In period rooms, we usually scribe the sides and the top. It’s what gives a fitted wardrobe its built-in look.
Birch plywood
For drawers that are used every day, birch plywood boxes are hard-wearing, so they hold their shape.
Honest limits
Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we do not do:
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
- Decorating or plastering the room
- Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Cheam
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Cheam station?
Yes, homes across Sutton and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room.
Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Cheam?
Yes, we work across Sutton, Cheam included, and across the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
What if my bedroom floor isn’t level?
We allow for it from the start. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls so the doors close neatly.
Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?
The space in front of the wardrobe usually decides it. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better. We will look at the room with you during the design visit.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?
Yes, with ventilation planned in. An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, so we plan airflow behind and within it.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
To be fair, modular wardrobe systems are easy to reconfigure. A bespoke interior is planned around your clothes from the start. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.
We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.
