Fitted wardrobes designed for your room

Fitted wardrobes in Sutton

A fitted wardrobe is built into the room itself, running floor to ceiling and wall to wall. There is no dusty gap on top and no awkward space at the ends. If you are planning fitted wardrobes in Sutton, we start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need. If your home has bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes and musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall, that is what fitted wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

If your bedroom is in a period house, expect uneven walls and tall ceilings; in a newer flat, expect plasterboard and a lower ceiling. A home in Sutton might be either, or neither. Each is measured and fitted in its own way. Ceiling height sets how tall the furniture can go.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • The internal fittings
  • The width and height of the space

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What we need to know

To give us a picture of the room, it’s useful to include:

  • How you want to use the space
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Examples of the look you’re after

To make a start, drop us a line using the contact form and let us know which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a written quote afterwards.

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

For some, it is about a calmer room. A run of painted doors from wall to wall looks quieter than several separate pieces.

Fitted wardrobes can help with:

  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • Too little room for clothes
  • A sloping ceiling that is hard to use
  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe

If your home is one of the older houses near St Nicholas Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote

Questions we’re often asked

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Sutton (London) station?

Yes, homes across London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Sutton?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?

You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes, in the proportions you need. We plan it with you when we visit.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Flats, conversions and lettings

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

Caring for painted furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
  • List the things that won’t hang, such as jumpers and shoes
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations

Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line, and sliding doors can be reset on their track.

Close doors gently and don’t let them swing into furniture, and slide doors without forcing them. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Before fitting day, we check the route in along with the room itself, so fitted wardrobes arrive in sections that fit through. We cover floors and doorways on the way in.

  1. You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
  6. Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

Before fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Starting with a design visit

Bedroom storage in Sutton

Homes built between 1973 and 1999 make up about 25% of the housing in the area around Sutton, with about 22% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of Sutton is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. Vans bringing furniture to Sutton fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.

Near listed buildings like Church of St Nicholas, less than half a mile south of the centre of Sutton, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. The wider area includes historic houses such as Nonsuch Mansion, about 1.6 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Sutton is one of London’s 33 local authority areas. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Sutton is part of that. Our work takes in places right across the rest of London, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

We cover every part of SM1, SM2, SM3 and SM7. We cover homes on streets such as High Street, Manor Place and St Nicholas Way, for fitted wardrobes and any of our other fitted furniture. Nearby, we also make fitted wardrobes in Benhilton (1 mile north), Carshalton (1 mile east), Shanklin Village (1 mile south), St Helier (1 mile north) and Rosehill (1 mile north). Elsewhere in the rest of London, we also cover Wallington (2 miles east), Bandonhill (3 miles east), Beddington (3 miles east), Roundshaw (3 miles east), Russell Hill (3 miles east) and Woodcote Green (3 miles south-east).
