Fitted wardrobes for homes in North Cheam

About 58% of the homes in the neighbourhood around North Cheam went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 13% between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. North Cheam is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If you live near Nonsuch Park, fitted wardrobes are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. For a flat near West Sutton station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For a family home near Cheam Park Farm Primary Academy, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

We also make fitted wardrobes in nearby places such as Carshalton (2 miles east), The Wrythe (2 miles east), Wallington (3 miles east), Rosehill (2 miles north-east), Bandonhill (4 miles east) and St Helier (2 miles north-east). About our fitted wardrobes in North Cheam

We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in a colour agreed with you. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Typical reasons to get in touch are clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms and standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A bedroom in a house from between the wars typically has simpler mouldings than a Victorian one, which makes it simple to take fitted furniture up to the ceiling. Around North Cheam, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses are a big part of the housing, high cupboards make a good home for suitcases and spare bedding. The skirting is scribed around rather than removed.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Questions from North Cheam

Does a conservation area in or near North Cheam affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in North Cheam?

Yes. North Cheam is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Sutton and London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?

We plan the sections around the route into your flat, and the wardrobe is put together in the room. Tell us if your block has lift or concierge booking rules.

How long will the fitting take?

The fitting depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The wardrobes are built in our workshop first before we come to fit them.

Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?

Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside. If there’s damp on the wall already, it should be sorted first.

What it costs

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • The internal fittings
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Parking near your home
  • The width and height of the space

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Before the design visit

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Fitting day, step by step

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Advice

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Drawers get heavy use, so we often make the boxes from birch plywood.

Spray-painted finish

Spraying coats edges and corners evenly. You choose the colour before we start.

Practical tips

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
  • Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
  • Let us know about any damp you’ve seen on bedroom walls

A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough to clean painted doors. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays, as they can dull the paint.

Avoid drying clothes in the bedroom where you can, as the extra moisture can lead to condensation. Opening a window now and then helps.
