Cheam Wall Beds

Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?

Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, rather than a quick order. In return, the cabinet, shelves and finish are designed together. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

How we make wall beds for Cheam

The bed mechanism must be fixed securely, exactly as its maker specifies, into a wall or floor that is sound enough to hold it. At the design visit we look at the wall it will go on as solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings. People typically come to us about shelves or a desk around the bed and a guest bed that disappears in the day, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A loft conversion is a common way to add a bedroom to a semi or an interwar house, and that slope can be used for storage built to the angle. Around Cheam, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large part of the housing. We work in lofts that are already converted, with each piece scribed to the slope and set level.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Questions from Cheam

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Cheam?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Cheam station?

Yes. We cover all of Sutton and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

How long will the wall bed take to fit?

It depends on the design. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote, so you will know before we start.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

We plan the route in during the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

What does a wall bed cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The bed size, the cabinet and any storage around it all make a difference. For a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What affects the price in Cheam

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • How big the furniture is
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The internal fittings
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

What to send when you get in touch

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • What the furniture needs to hold

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

What it’s made from

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting suits a cabinet that should match the room’s woodwork.

Moisture-resistant MDF

On an external wall, moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice, alongside good ventilation.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Cheam

In the area around Cheam, the largest groups of homes date from between 1973 and 1999 (about 31%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 27%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List records 7 entries within half a mile of the centre of Cheam. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Sutton is inside it. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Cheam, as it does anywhere else in London. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.

For an older house near Church of St Andrew, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. If your children go to Glaisdale School or a school nearby, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. Nonsuch Mansion, about 1 mile north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Cheam is about 1 mile north-east of Sutton, part of the London Borough of Sutton. Design visits and fitting in Cheam can be on a Saturday, by arrangement. In Sutton, Cheam is one of the places we cover, and the borough has 17 places on our list.

We work across SM2, SM3 and SM1. Whether you live on a street like Wray Road, York Road and The Avenue or on one nearby, we can visit to measure up for wall beds. Flats, blocks and rented homes

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.

What happens on fitting day

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, from the front door to the room itself.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the bed cabinet in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cabinet is joined in the room, fixed securely and set level.

Before fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Ask for a quote

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.
