  • Too little room for clothes
  • An tricky slope in a loft bedroom
  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall

Flats, conversions and lettings

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Single Street

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and clothes pressed against a cold wall can lead to condensation. We allow for ventilation behind and within wardrobes on external walls. Moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice there too. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are several odd pieces where one run of storage would do and wardrobes that are full to bursting.

Many 1930s houses have had a loft conversion, adding a bedroom under a sloping ceiling, and that slope can be used for storage built to the angle. A big part of the housing around Single Street is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Our part starts once the loft has been converted, and the furniture is scribed to the slope and the walls.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Single Street

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Single Street were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 29%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Single Street include Church of St Peter and St Paul (Grade II*), under half a mile east, and Bell Cottage (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Single Street. Parking and access are planned at the measuring visit.

For a family home near Cudham Church of England Primary School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. Down House, about 1 mile north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Single Street

Is parking a problem for fitting in Single Street?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Single Street?

Yes, we work across Bromley, Single Street included, and across the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Will fitted wardrobes get up the stairs to my flat?

The wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors. We measure the stairs, landings and lift as well as the bedroom. In a leasehold flat, it’s worth checking the lease first.

Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?

You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes. We plan it with you when we visit.

Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?

Yes, with ventilation planned in. An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, so we allow for airflow behind and inside the wardrobe, which helps avoid condensation.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

Do you need fitted wardrobes in Single Street?

After a loft conversion, the new bedroom usually needs storage that suits the slopes. Wardrobes built under the slope use space that would otherwise sit empty.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • A bedroom that never feels tidy
  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go

For a flat near Chelsfield station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Will the quote be in writing?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • The internal fittings
  • The width and height of the space
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What we need to know

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It’s enough to send:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • What the furniture needs to hold

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, message us from the contact page and let us know about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.
