Walk-in wardrobes in Single Street: what you get

Drawers, shelves and shoe storage make a walk-in wardrobe work day to day. Folded knitwear sits well on shelves, while drawers hold smaller things and shoes get shelving of their own. A dressing table with a mirror can be built in where there is space. If your home has somewhere for shoes to live and room for two wardrobes in one space, walk-in wardrobes made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the housing around Single Street, bedrooms are often straightforward shapes, sometimes with a chimney breast or a bay. That makes a full wall of fitted furniture simple to plan, laid out around what you store. Where a loft conversion has been added, the sloping ceiling can take storage too.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Caring for painted furniture

People planning walk-in wardrobes often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Know what you will keep before planning
  • Plan lighting with your electrician
  • Make sure walls are dry before units go in
  • Let air move through the space

Once the units are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Treat the doors and drawer fronts gently at first, and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth.

Deal with any damp before the units go in. External walls can be colder and damper, and ventilation inside the units helps.

Questions we are often asked

I live near Chelsfield station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Single Street?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. We cannot advise on leases, so please check yours.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Do I need doors on a walk-in wardrobe?

Either works. Doors keep dust off and give a calm, finished look, and open storage makes things quick to find. Many people choose a mix.

Where other trades come in

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Building work to create the room
  • New lights or sockets
  • Advice on your lease

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Single Street

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Single Street were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 29%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 6 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Single Street. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Single Street is covered by it. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Peter and St Paul, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Peter and St Paul, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Living in a block of flats near Chelsfield station? Then walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

From workshop to your room

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about your clothes, shoes and bags and how you get ready.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan hanging lengths, shelves, drawers and shoe storage with you.
  3. You receive a written quote for the walk-in wardrobe.
  4. We build the carcasses, shelves and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The walk-in wardrobe is fitted, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the inside fittings go in last.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

How to get a quote

Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?

Modular units are made in fixed sizes, so the space above and at the ends is often wasted. A bespoke design can run to the ceiling and fill the walls, which can add a lot of storage. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.
