Single Street homes and window seats

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Single Street were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 29%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List records 6 entries within half a mile of the centre of Single Street. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 76% of households in the neighbourhood around Single Street, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

Down House, about 1 mile north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat. If your children go to Cudham Church of England Primary School or a school nearby, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

About our window seats in Single Street

We make the seat itself, and you can source a cushion to the size we give you. You can then choose the fabric and style yourself. We make the seat to suit the cushion you plan, with a suitable depth and height. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are wanting a quiet place to read and standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay.

In a family house, the hall and stairs typically carry the most clutter. Around Single Street, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, fitted storage near the front door can take much of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

From workshop to your room

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the bay or recess.
  2. We visit to measure the angles of the bay and the floor, and go through the design.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. In our workshop we make each section of the seat from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the seat in your home, trimming the edges to meet the walls and cill.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

What prompts window seats in Single Street

Parents often want a window seat for a child’s room, with toy storage below. Drawers keep toys within easy reach. It also keeps the floor clear.

We are often asked to help with:

  • No space for toys and games
  • A bay with no furniture that fits
  • Unused space below a sash window
  • A child’s room that needs storage and seating

For a flat near Chelsfield station, window seats are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

What to check before you book

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?

FAQs: window seats in Single Street

Can you make window seats for a home in Single Street?

Yes. Single Street is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.

Do you cover homes near Chelsfield station?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

One advantage of a standalone bench is that it can go with you. Fitted seats stay with the house, and they make more of the window. Which suits you depends on your plans. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What we do not do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Electrical work around the seat
  • Fabric covers and cushions
  • Moving or replacing a radiator, which is for your plumber

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Lift-up lids or drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Radiator grilles
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Before and after fitting day

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Make sure any shutters still open fully
  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Think about whether you’d like shelves either side

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the seat clean. Dry it afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The front edge picks up marks first.

Use a step rather than standing on the seat. The seat is made for sitting, and standing puts weight in one spot. A little care keeps it looking good.
