Fitted wardrobes for your home in Berrylands

Fitted wardrobes in Berrylands: what you get

Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, keeping long hanging where there’s height and drawers or shelves lower down. It turns an awkward corner into storage. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use and mismatched bedroom furniture.

A good part of the housing around Berrylands is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Looking after your furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall in advance
  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations

Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them instead of crowding one section. Heavy coats are best on a short rail or near a support.

Let doors close gently rather than slamming, and slide doors without forcing them. It keeps hinges and runners in adjustment longer.

When you need someone else

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Treating damp or mould on the walls
  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
  • Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work

Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can use our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it is made from

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Birch plywood
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish

Fitting day, step by step

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know at the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the bedroom, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the design.
  3. Your quote follows, with the layout, materials and finish set out.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
  5. We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

How to prepare

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Getting a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a written quote. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Questions we are often asked

Is Berrylands in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes, Berrylands is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

I live near Berrylands station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?

Yes. Building around the bed uses a wall that often goes unused. We measure the bed and the room at the design visit.

Will fitted wardrobes get up the stairs to my flat?

We plan the sections around the route into your flat, and the wardrobe is put together in the room. Let us know about any concierge or lift booking rules.

Berrylands homes and fitted wardrobes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Berrylands were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 68%) and before 1919 (about 13%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Berrylands include Christ Church (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 68% of homes in the neighbourhood around Berrylands date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead.

For a flat near Berrylands station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. The wider area includes historic houses such as Hampton Court Palace, about 2.4 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If you live near Beverley Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

Flats, leases and landlords

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t advise on your lease.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the design visit.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Drawers get heavy use, so we often make the boxes from birch plywood.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting lets you judge the colour in the room as it goes on. Joins and scribed edges are painted in the same coats.
